FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 3, 2014   Press  Release   Contact: Mike McQuerry 202-225–3816   CONGRESSWOMAN  SHEILA  JACKSON  LEE   ANNOUNCES  THAT  U.S.  JUSTICE  DEPARTMENT     TO  INVESTIGATE  TRAGIC  DEATH  OF  ALFRED   WRIGHT  OF  JASPER,  TEXAS     Washington,   DC   –   Congresswoman   Sheila   Jackson   Lee,   a   Senior   Member   of   the   House   Judiciary   and   Homeland   Security   Committees,   released   the   following   statement   regarding   her   request   that   the   United   States   Department   Justice   investigate   the   mysterious   death   of   Alfred   Wright,   a   28-­‐year   old   African   American   male  from  Jasper,  Texas:     “In  response  to  my  request  to  U.S.  Attorney  General  Eric  Holder  of  January  23,  2014,   I   am   pleased   to   announce   that   the   Department   of   Justice   will   investigate   and   take   appropriate   action   in   connection   with   the tragic and mysterious death of Alfred Wright, a 28-year old African American male from Jasper, Texas, whose body was found 18 days after he was first reported missing in a location that had allegedly been searched more than 17 days before by local law enforcement officials. “I am confident that the Department of Justice will conduct a thorough and independent investigation into all the circumstances surrounding this tragedy and to take appropriate action necessary to vindicate the federal interest, protect the civil rights of all Americans, ensure that all persons receive equal justice under law. “We are all better off when the facts are discovered, the truth is discerned and the family and the community are at peace.” ###
