THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON August l6. 20] I Mr. Jacob Zuma President ofthe Republic of South Africa Pretoria Dear Mr. President: I was pleased to receive the recent invitation from the President of the Republic of Korea Lee Myung-bak to attend the second Nuclear Security Summit in Seoul next March. I am looking forward to attending this Summit, and I h0pe to see you there. Since our historic gathering in Washington in April 20l0, we have seen many encouraging steps to improve the security of nuclear materials around the world and to strengthen our individual and collective ability to prevent nuclear smuggling. At the same time, we are reminded almost daily of the ongoing threat of terrorism and of the necessity to do all we can to avoid the global catastrophe of a tctrorist nuclear attack. I am working hard on the tasks we established at the April Summit, and I urge you to do the same. I am pleased that our technical cooperation is minimizing the use of highly enriched uranium, while supporting important medical needs around the world. It would certainly be a highlight of the Seoul Summit if you were to announce that South Africa will blend down all South African highly enriched uranium to produce low enriched uranium for medical isotope production. My team remains prepared to help with this process. We need to use the Seoul Summit to highlight our progress on nuclear security and to identify new steps we can take together toward the vision of a more prosperous and peaceful world, one in which nuclear threats are diminished through cooperation and purposeful action. Working together, we can make the Seoul Summit at suecws and better protect people around the world from nuclear terrorism. Sincerely,
