Even as the practice of sending students to adult court to handle their truancy cases has been 
debated in the Texas legislature, there is no comprehensive data about how often teenagers 
are jailed on charges stemming from truancy.  
 
BuzzFeed News set out to determine how often kids are sent to jail for missing school. 
Reporters requested jail data from Texas’ 10 largest counties detailing inmate names, 
charges, and time served. While most provided the information at little or no cost, Bexar 
County, home to San Antonio, asked for $884. As a result, it is not included in the analysis. 
The data also does not include records from any of the other 244 counties in Texas.
