How long will the reroute last? The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) will construct improvements along 23rd Avenue between S Jackson Street and E John Street likely starting in mid-May 2015. These improvements will make it safer to walk, drive, and ride transit along this stretch of 23rd Avenue. The reroute will last approximately 8 months, or until vehicle traffic is allowed back on 23rd Avenue when SDOT completes the first phase of construction. Route 48 will continue to follow construction traffic detours as construction progresses north past E Cherry Street to E John Street. Construction is expected to last through late 2016. How are the routes changing during construction? All traffic, including buses, will be detoured around construction activities. Routes 4, 8 and Northbound Route 48 will be rerouted off of 23rd Avenue between S Jackson Street and E Cherry Street for about eight months during construction. • • Route 4 will not travel between S Walker Street and E Jefferson Street while construction takes place on 23rd Avenue south of E Cherry Street. Instead, its last stop will be at 21st Avenue and E James Street where it will leave from when headed towards downtown. Route 4 cannot travel south of Garfield High School because this route operates using trolley buses. The only detour route would be to use Martin Luther King Jr Way S, which does not have trolley wires installed along the entire pathway of the detour. Route 8 will stay on Martin Luther King Jr Way S, in both directions, during construction. • Northbound Route 48 will detour around the construction zone on 23rd Avenue to Martin Luther King Jr Way S between S Jackson Street and E Cherry Street. It will turn east on S Jackson Street, go north on Martin Luther King Jr Way S, and turn west on E Cherry Street. • Southbound Route 48 will continue to operate along 23rd Avenue but will likely experience traffic delays during construction. Are bus stops being removed or added as a result of this service revision or construction work? See the route map for location of stops during the longterm construction reroute. How will riders be affected by this service revision? Riders traveling through the construction zone should expect travel delays as a result of short reroutes and potential traffic congestion. How would these routes change when Link light rail begins operating to Capitol Hill and UW at Husky Stadium? Routes 8 and 48 are a few of many routes being considered for change as part of Metro and Sound Transit’s bus restructure following the start of Link light rail to Capitol Hill and UW in early 2016.
