N W l’ S MISSION N W l is dedicated to using sound, objective science for the wise management of natural resources. N W l recognizes that renewable resources such as wildlife, fish, wetlands, wilderness, forest, range, air, water and soil are dynamic, resilient, and respond positively to wise management. N W l recognizes the direct, positive relationship be tween progress and environmental quality and champi ons private sector stewardship which enhances the resource base without unnecessarily inhibiting eco nomic growth. N W l supports environmentally sound, site and situation specific practices which harness the creative forces of the private sector, protect or extend private property rights, and reduce the regulatory bur den of government. Taylor U.S. Congressman - NC A t the National Wilderness Institute, we believe the solutions to our environ mental problems lie in responsible stewardship, not in social uprising, needlessly scaring consumers, throwing small businessmen into jail, protecting roaches, exposing people to lifethreatening diseases, or driving them into oblivion. W e hope you agree but, believe it or not, many don ’ t. Cases in point: •In Pennsylvania, a man was sentenced to three years in prison for rem oving several thousand old tires and otherwise im proving a small lot he bought to expand his business. The EPA considers his private property a valuable wetland as it is bordered by a small, often bonedry stream.1 •The N R D C raised huge amounts o f money by starting a scare cam paign about Alar on apples causing cancer. They ignored the fact that one would have to eat 28,000 pounds o f these apples every day for 70 years to risk developing cancer, as well as the farming families who went bankrupt and parents who feared for their childrens’health.2 •The editor o f a well known group’ s journal claimed that “ eradicating smallpox was wrong. It played an important part in balancing ecosystem s.” 3• The president o f one o f the largest membership environmental groups stated during an Earth Day rally that “ the Environmental Revolution., .will be socially disruptive, poten tially violent.” 4 •The Federal Governm ent is considering adding the Tuna Cave cockroach to the Endangered Species List.5 •The former president o f the League o f Conservation Voters stated, “ W e must identify our enemies and drive them into oblivion.”6 If you care about the environment but agree that this sort o f extremism is not the answer, then read on— N W l is for you. 1 “Review and Outhxik". T o have a healthy environment, we must have a strong economy and prospering society—you simply cannot have one without the others. We are environmentalists who believe in science, technology, private property, economic progress and common sense. We believe in people and the notion that natural resources should be protected for people, not from them. NWI's programs demonstrate our firm commitment to ideas that work. At NWl, we believe that environmental policy is only as good as the science upon which it is based. The ideas we promote are based on scientific fact, not hype and worst case scenarios. Reaching out to every sector o f society and across the nation, NWl provides the public with accurate information on pressing environmental issues. The cornerstone of our education efforts is the NWl Resource magazine, with reliable information from experts in wildlife biology, technology, energy, agriculture, environ mental regulation, as well as exclusive interviews with prominent individuals from ambassadors to astronauts.
