The IRS was ready for full occupation by November 1899 [MRS-001506]. In January 1926, the federal government purchased the IRS land and buildings from the Roman Catholic Church [MRS-001426; MRS-000674]. On March 5, 1981, the IRS lands were granted reserve status [MRS-000689-0001, pg. 1-2]. In April 1987, the Cowessess Indian Band established the Cowessess Board of Education, which assumed responsibility for the operation of the IRS [MRS-005117, pg. 8-9]. There were also organized and active recreation and handicraft programs at the IRS. GDC-012083 INDIAN RESIDENTIAL SCHOOL BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS Date Event Document Reference 1898 to 1899 The IRS opended on December 19, 1898, while it was still under construction. All of the IRS buildings were completed and ready for full occupation by mid-November 1899. The main IRS building was three storeys plus a basement. In the basement was the cellar, dining room, pantry and dairy, washing room, furnace room, Sisters’ dining room, and kitchen. The first storey contained the boys’ recreation room, a classroom, the main entrance, a room for children’s parents and a parlour. The second storey contained the girls’ recreation room, the priest’s bedroom and three other rooms, a sewing room, the infirmary and a room for the Sisters. The dormitories were located on the top floor. MRS-001506 MRS-001339-0001 1909 The three storey main IRS building measured 58’ x 38’, with a height of 52’ from the ground to the roof peak. The basement contained two dining rooms, kitchen, pantry, dairy, bake-room, lavatory with a power washing-machine and a rain-water tank. The main floor contained the front entrance, parlours, separate recreation rooms for girls and boys, a chapel, and the classroom. The second floor contained the infirmaries, quarters for nuns, a sewing room and a pharmacy. The third floor contained separate dormitories for girls and boys, each measuring 35’ x 23’. MRS-001515 1915 Two wings that served as dormitories were added to the main IRS building. The southern wing was used as the boys’ dormitory area and the northern wing as the girls’ dormitory area. MRS-001097, pg. 8 1921 A laundry building, farmer’s house and cesspool were installed on the IRS property. MRS-001399 1925 to 1926 The IRS was situated in the Qu’Appelle Valley, south of Crooked Lake, near Marieval, Saskatchewan, on 206 acres of land. The IRS site also contained an additional parcel of 282 acres. The first floor included a parlour, the priest’s dining room and bedroom, a chapel and vestry, along with the primary, junior and senior classrooms. The second floor contained the Sisters’ dorms, bathrooms, writing room, infirmary, Sisters’ recreation room, sewing room and a room for the junior girls. The third floor contained the dormitories. An underground tunnel ran from the laundry room in the basement of the main IRS building to the boiler and pump house. This tunnel ran underneath the gravel laneway that separated the two buildings. MRS-001097, pg. 8 1953 Renovations were done to the main IRS building, including an addition to the girls’ wing and an annex added to the basement which allowed for a new pantry and the enlargement of the kitchen. New stairs were built and the building was rewired, while most of the walls were recovered and painted. MRS-001097, pg. 8 April 1953 to March 1959 In April 1953, a new classroom for IRS pupils in Grades 1 and 2 was being held in the basement of the Roman Catholic church. From September 1953 to March 1959, the federal government rented two classrooms for the IRS in the basement of the Crooked Lake Roman Catholic Church. The church was situated in close proximity to the IRS, but was located on property belonging to the Church and was not on IRS property. The two junior classrooms for Grades 1 and 2 were situated in the main IRS building. MRS-000037 January 1967 to May 1968 Around January 1967, three classrooms were situated in the main IRS building, five were held in the classroom block, and one was operating in the basement of the church. The church basement was still in use as classroom space in November 1968. It is not known from documents how long the church basement classrooms continued to be used. 1974 The skating rink on the IRS property was located northeast of the main IRS building. MRS-001261, pg. 13 1975; 1988 A science room, industrial arts room, library, staff room, and gymnasium were added to the IRS classroom block. Renovations were also done in older sections of the block to create more classrooms. In addition, two portable classrooms were installed at the IRS; these portables were in use until 1988. Grades 1 to 12 were taught at the IRS. MRS-005117, pg. 8 MCF-000016, pg. 1 1981 A “Group home” to house students was added to the IRS. The building included a basement with five bedrooms and ground floor with seven bedrooms. Common rooms included a TV lounge, kitchen, and a combination laundry and exercise room. There was also a bedroom for a Child Care Worker. MCF-000016, pg. 1 MRS-005117, pg. 40 1988 The IRS buildings included the main student residence building, a classroom block, a gym, a group home, and maintenance buildings. The main IRS building was square-shaped and made of brick. The kitchen, dining room, boiler room/water treatment, recreation rooms and storage rooms were located in the basement. Administrative offices and a conference room were on the main floor. The second and third floors consisted mainly of dormitories with some smaller rooms. A group home adjacent to the main building served as the residence for a smaller number of students. The IRS classroom block had 11 classrooms. Classrooms for Grades 3 to 8 and administrative offices were located on the main floor. The following rooms were located in the basement: classrooms for Grades 1 and 2; a small resource room for tutoring; the “Cree Room”; the “Saulteaux Room”; the business education/computer room; and, the alternate/work study room. The section referred to as the “High School End”, for pupils in Grades 9 to 12, had industrial arts facilities, a science lab, and home economics room. The classroom block also had a gymnasium and a small library. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION 1922 Several students won prizes for writing, sewing, crocheting and embroidery at the Regina Fair [MRS-006051-0001]. 1964/65 On Saturdays, some of the Marieval IRS students hiked in the nearby hills or to one of the local beaches [MRS-000024-0001, pg. 17]. 1967/68 Sixteen of the Marieval IRS students travelled to Expo in Montreal along with their chaperones. Students in the “special class” went to see the circus in Regina. Other students went to a music festival in Melville [MRS￾000653, pg. 14-17]. 1968/69 The top track and field athletes from the IRS competed in a meet at the Muscowequan IRS [MRS-001220, pg. 34-35].
