COVID-19 Vaccinations and Breakthrough Infections Analysis based on new COVID-19 cases reported June 1-30, 2021 1 COVID-19 Vaccinations Work • Measured at 21 day mark to allow for necessary immune response to first dose • Two doses recommended for all vaccines currently offered in Saskatchewan • It is anticipated that serious illness rates will continue to decrease as residents receive second doses • Two weeks after second dose is when optimum protection begins New COVID-19 Cases – June 2021 • There were 2,032 cases reported in June 2021. Of these, 36.8% were aged 19 years or younger. • Of the 355 cases with a first dose, 26.8% (95) had comorbid conditions. • Of the 36 cases with a second dose, 38.9% (14) had comorbid conditions. COVID-19 Hospitalizations – June 2021 • Among the cases reported in June, 102 individuals were hospitalized and/or admitted to ICU. • Of the 31 hospitalized and/or ICU cases with a first dose, 64.5% (20) had comorbid conditions and 48.4% (15) cases are 70 years and older. • Of the five hospitalized and/or ICU cases with a second dose, most (80%) had comorbid conditions and 60% are 70 years and older. COVID-19 ICU Admissions – June 2021 • Among the cases reported in June, 21 individuals were admitted to ICU. • Most individuals (75%) with a first dose who were admitted to ICU were aged 70 years or older and all had comorbid medical conditions. • Of the 21 ICU admissions, none were in individuals with a second dose. COVID-19 Deaths – June 2021 • Among the cases reported in June, 15 individuals died. Six (40%) had not been vaccinated and nine (60%) were vaccinated with a first dose. • Most vaccinated individuals with first dose (67%) were aged 80 years or older and all had comorbid medical conditions. • There were no deaths among June cases who had been vaccinated with a second dose.
