22 June 2015 Dear Parents and Carers I would like to bring to your attention an issue that arose through the use of social media on the weekend. The school was made aware of some abhorrent comments posted on social media by three of our students. The comments were in relation to columnist Clementine Ford’s opinions regarding the Sunrise program commentary on the use of photographs of women posted on social media without consent. The relevant authorities have been informed. The comments include demeaning references towards women and racism and are in stark contrast to the school values of respect and compassion. In contrast to this incident, I’m confident that as parents and members of our school community you see many actions within our student body that reflect our values. I can reassure the school community that I am dealing directly with the students involved and the staff as a whole has addressed the issue more broadly with the student body today during our extended Pastoral Care Group session. Our Priorities direct us to work with our students to achieve academically and contribute positively to society. We do not shy away from addressing members of our community when their actions do not meet our high expectations and standards. By dealing with this issue openly and directly, I hope that we provide a learning opportunity for all of us and that something positive can be drawn from this distressing experience. I ask that you also take this opportunity to talk with your children about safe and responsible use of social media, about harassment and the values of respect, compassion and resilience. I thank those parents and members of the public who brought this issue to my attention and who have supported us to deal with the matter. If you wish to discuss this matter with me, please contact the school on 82319373. Yours sincerely Anita Zocchi Principal
