Ray Marshall Secretary of Labor Department of Labor Building 200 Constitution Avenue Washington, D.C. 20210 Dear Secretary Marshall: I have been provided with a copy of the letter sent to you by the American Industrial Health Council concerning the Department of Labor?s Chicago press sem- inar on occupational disease: ?Lost in the Workplace?. I have also been provided with a copy of the brochure which announced the seminar, charging that "At least 100,000 Americans? die each year from exposure to work- place chemicals, while "countless others" are left dis- abled or sterile in a ?massive yet silent slaughter.? As Mr. Krumrei says in his letter for the AlHC,i?iif?5?I Iii; this kind of rhetoric fails to serve any constructive purpose, and can only strain the relationship between business and government. I want you to know that I share the concern ex? pressed in Mr. Krumrei?s letter. Your comments would be greatly appreciated. In particular, I would appreciate an explanation for the claims respecting the number of persons who die or are permanently disabled by exposure to chemical hazards. Sincerely, Ma Hmsmug John C.
