Just look at the mutual funds that could brag about being in the top 25 percent of their category for the year through March 2011. Less than a third were able to replicate their performance the following year. Less than 5 percent of that initial group was able to do it three years in a row. Stretch the window out to March 2015, and only 0.3 percent were able to rank in the top 25 percent for five straight years, data from S&P Dow Jones Indices shows. Q1 earnings growth S&P 500 Stanching the flow Estimate of Q1 5.6% Profit pessimism The calendar is closing in on the end of another quar ter, and Wall Street is again getting more pessimistic about corporate earnings. After slashing their esti mates in recent weeks, ana lysts are now forecasting a drop of 4.4 percent for com panies in the Standard & Poor’s 500 index from last year’s second quarter. Three months ago, they were call ing for a decline of less than half that, 2.1 percent. Some thing similar happened earlier this year. Analysts came into the first quarter proved to be incorrect. 3.2 -3.0 At start At end Actual Source: S&P Capital IQ with expectations for mod est earnings growth. But pessimism increased as the quarter progressed, and by the end of it, Wall Street was forecasting an earnings decline. That pessimism The exodus from what was once the biggest bond fund may soon be over. Investors pulled a net $2.6 billion from the Pimco Total Return fund last month, according to Morn ingstar. That’s a fraction of what was fleeing the fund after the surprise departure of manager Bill Gross in September. At the height of the fund’s outflows, inves tors yanked $32 billion in October. Last month’s with drawal was the smallest since before Gross departed. The fund ended May with $107 billion in assets, less than half the $229 billion it had the year before.
