Riverside County Fire Department responded Insurance to a reported commercial structure ?rc located at 45853 ?ubidous Street in the City ot? Indio. Engine 86 arrived ?rst and observed an app roairn ater 50.090 square foot Carrier commercial structure with brown and black smoke showing. The building was made up ofa vacant grocery store of about 40.000 square feet and sit strip mall style units. separated by a ?rewall. com prising the other town square tact. The smoke was coming from the vacant portion of the building. the majority ol'it coming from the eastern side.Fire?ghters were required to perform signi?cant forcible en try at the buildings former n1 ain entrance. This was due to added secu rity measures in place becauso of the building being vacant. OnCe inside the vacant po rtlon. ?re?ghters discovered that the tire was well established. The ?re progressed through the vacant portion, eventually leading to a total loss. The ?re was prevented from extending into the other units: however. they did sustain some damage. The occupying businesses were The Ninety-Nine Cent Center. Teresa?s Sassy Scissors. ?Ir'cn de Agua. Berta Alterations. Desert Choice Realty. and Raspado?s KiosJIll of the these units sustained some water damage iron: ?re?ghting operations. damage from forcible entry. and damage from ?re?ghters checking for extension in the attic. Berta Alterations Sustained more signi?cant damage than the other units.The vacant portion of the building had been nnoccu pied for several yea rs. The utilities were shut off. This portion had been previously been used by CAL RCOFD ?re?ghters for training purposes. It was common knowledge to those having train ed there. as well as to the local civilian pepulation. that there was a notable transient presence in the area surrounding the vacant portion. and presumany inside otthe building as well.Du ring the course of ?re?ghting operations the Fire Department Connection to the buildings sprinkler system on the west side of'tbe structure was not utilized. lipon investigating the system alter the ?re. it was discovered that it was not operational. This was due to several factors. The sprinkler system shuto?' located at the main riser was missing, a Insurance signi?cant number of sprinkler heads where missing, and the underground water main supplying the sprinkler riser was turned off. During the ?re investigation the Agent water main was turned on as a test. This resulted in water coming from the system?s drain. This showed that the system had most liker been drained In the past and the drain tet?t [ll-pan. The Past Indicator Verve was exercised to ensure that it was In the open position as it indicated. The Post Indicator Valve was not lochedA systematic and methodical approach to origin and cause determination was utilized. indicators such as the location ofthe ?re upon units arrival. the totality of fuel consumption in that area. and the direction of failure of the steel structural mean hers. it was determined that the general area of origin was on the eastern side approximately midway between the not1b and south end Due to the intensity and consumption of the ?re, Investigator was unable to determ the speci?c area of origin.?l?he investigator determined that this ?re is hum an causedl but the exact cause is undetermined.
