If there needs to be a committee, Sherri Carver From: Carl Leppelman [mailto:cleppelman@rrps.net] Sent: Thursday, March 5, 2015 12:30 PM To: LaJuana Coleman Cc: Sherri Carver Subject: FW: Palomar Hi LJ, I am requesting that a committee be convened as soon as possible to review the book and make a recommendation to Dr. Cleveland. Please follow policy 425A. There is normally a form (425b) completed by the person who is challenging the book. It is not prudent to have the form completed. Instead, contact Sherrie Carver and she will give you the specifics of the concern prior to meeting as a committee. This is a time sensitive matter and I appreciate your assistance. The book has been removed by the superintendent until such time as the committee reviews and makes a recommendation. Carl, Can you clarify why a committee needs to be formed? It appears that the book is off the shelf, answers have been provided and case closed, unless I am missing something. Please advise. LaJuana, With the help of our librarian, Brenna, I have answered the following questions. needs to be removed from circulation. Let me know if I can be of further help. Sherri As far as convening a committee, will you be setting that up . . . .not much to discuss …. no question the book No, we do not have a restricted section. All areas of the library are available for all students. Theoretically, nonstudents and members of the public could come to the library, but they would have to go through the usual sign in process at the front desk, etc., and they may not check out material. Realistically, the library is only used by staff and students On Thursday, February 26, Ms. Lopez brought the book first to the principal’s secretary and then to the librarian where we had a discussion about the content of the book. The book does not fit with the current selection policy in place at Rio Rancho Public Schools and is aimed at a higher age level than we purchase for (Library Bill of Rights Policy 425: “to provide materials that will enrich and support the curriculum, taking into consideration the varied interests, abilities, and maturity levels [bolding mine] of the pupils served). A meeting was scheduled with the principal for March 2nd. Over the weekend, Ms. Lopez chose to alert the local media. The meeting occurred on March 2nd as scheduled when the decision was made to pull the book from circulation until further decisions could be made. As far as I’m aware, she did not fill out the 425B form, although she showed us each page that she found objectionable in the book during our meeting. As far as the information being available to the public, that would be District’s decision.
