An open letter to Mr. Jack Griffin and the Tribune Company Board of Directors: We are sending this letter because we have devoted our careers to public service and to the creation and strengthening of a greater Los Angeles. Our constituents reflect the full demographic, ideological and cultural diversity of our region. They are the hard-working men and women who have made Los Angeles the most vibrant and most exciting city on the planet, and the people for whom the LA Times has always served by providing a window to the broader community in which they are the most necessary part. As their elected representatives, we work to bring together this wide range of backgrounds, beliefs and aspirations to form a society that can work together to take on our greatest challenges. While there are many matters of public policy on which we might disagree, we are absolutely united in our recognition of the valuable and necessary role that the Los Angeles Times has played throughout its existence as a leader in our community. The Times provides a common ground on which the people of Los Angeles can come together and helps us bridge gaps between sectors, ideologies and interests. Its journalists provide us with the information we need to make the necessary and sometimes difficult decisions about our future. When the Times is run by men and women who truly and deeply understand the complexities of our region and its people, both the newspaper and the communities it serves can flourish. Local leadership and control of our newspaper is of critical importance to the people of Los Angeles. No city can accomplish great things without a great newspaper -- one that is fully steeped in the history, the complexities and the future of the community it serves. We hope you understand how much the Times means to our city, our region and our state, and we urge you to consider the important role that Angelenos must play in its management and ownership as you consider the possibilities for the Times’ future. This decision is more important than any one individual. We hope you will move forward in a manner that recognizes that the Times and its readers will be best served if you now make the wise choice to put the paper in the hands of men and women who truly love both our city and our newspaper.
