City and County of San Francisco Board of Supervisors City Hall 1 Dr. Carlton B. Goodlett Place, Room 244 San Francisco, CA 94102-4689 October 5, 2015 Dear Supervisors Mar, Farrell, Christensen, Tang, Breed, Kim, Yee, Wiener, Campos, Cohen, and Avalos; We understand that you are considering a measure to put ?warming? labels on gas nozzles to alert drivers to the climate impacts of greenhouse gases. We are writing to applaud San Francisco?s leadership in drafting such an ordinance. Like you, we are feeling the effects climate change acutely; wildfires are raging in Eastern Washington, and our hydro-powered utilities are suffering from less water flow than previous years. Councilmember O?Brien intends to draft similar legislation, using your ordinance as a model, to put messages on gasoline dispensers that disclose to consumers how the burning of carbon based transportation fuels releases greenhouse gases, which contribute to climate change, a - pervasive threat to public health and welfare. Transportation fuels comprise the largest source of heat-trapping emissions in the Seattle area. Seattle?s Climate Action Plan specifies on-road transportation target reductions of 82% by 2030 from the 2008 baseline. These information labels can help establish the link between the consumption of fossil fuels and its impact on our climate, and highlight the importance of transforming our transportation infrastructure to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The labels let drivers understand the role they play in reducing carbon emissions, and will help both our cities meet our transportation related target emission reductions. . Thank you again for your leadership on this issue to support the ?warming? label legislation, and please let us know how we can support your efforts. Sincerely, .. .
