We, the undersigned members of the undergraduate astronomy community of UC Berkeley, offer our support to the 
complainants in Geoff Marcy’s Title IX investigation and wish to communicate our dissatisfaction with the 
University’s response. The primary goal of an educational institution should be to ensure the safety and well­being 
of its students. When sexual harassment is allowed to take place with virtually no consequence, that objective is 
compromised.  
 
A thorough investigation concluded that Geoff Marcy violated policies that were put in place to protect the students 
and the wider UC Berkeley community. We stress our frustration with the University’s lack of transparency and 
inadequate actions regarding a case that has serious and direct consequences for us specifically as undergraduates. 
The administrative response, or lack thereof, suggests that the behavior of which Marcy has been found guilty is 
tolerable on our campus. We urge the University to reflect on its previously stated pledge to combat sexual 
harassment and create a safe campus climate, and to consider how profoundly the response to this incident 
contradicts that pledge. We as students do not feel supported nor protected by the current administration. 
 
We call for the removal of the policy that instructs the chair to keep pertinent outcomes of a Title IX investigation 
confidential. 
 
We call for the implementation of a policy that ensures all members of the campus community who are affected by 
the outcome of an investigation are informed of official decisions in a direct and timely manner. 
 
We call for an effective pipeline through which complainants of a Title IX investigation may appeal the decision 
made by the University regarding the outcome of their case. 
 
We call for the University to acknowledge and apologize for its inappropriate handling of the case up to this point, 
and particularly to the targets of this harassment.  
 
We call for the University to remember its commitment to protect its students and members of the campus 
community, to realize how it has betrayed that commitment, and to take serious action to ensure that it does not 
continue to do so.  
 
Although Geoff Marcy’s resignation was a necessary step, it does not address underlying issues. We will remain 
dissatisfied until it is clear that protecting the safety and well­being of the campus community is the top priority of 
this institution.
