Arkans; Karin Nyrop Subject: Message from Bill Ayer, Board Chair UW Regents Dear Lewis: Regent Ayer understands you have some questions about the process regarding the Special meeting of the board on October 13 and the action taken there. He asked me to convey his following comments: * The Regents are aware of the requirements of the Open Public Meeting Act and were compliant with the Act through every step of the search process. * The Regents' vote to name Ana Mari Cauce president was made at a properly noticed special public meeting of the Board on October 13. Prior to this special meeting, I did not poll the Regents or ask whom they would vote for in advance of the public meeting. * In order to protect the confidentiality of applicants, the Board is not at liberty to discuss the specifics of the Regents' executive session on October 7. Following that session, I believed we had enough information from the extensive search committee work, interviews of applicants, and review of qualification that we were ready for the special meeting. I called the special meeting for October 13. * I asked for a special meeting of the Board to take action and in anticipation of the meeting I requested some communications planning be done for the Tuesday meeting, resulting in a draft press release and other preparations. Thank you Joan Goldblatt Secretary of the Board of Regents, University of Washington 139 Gerberding Hall, Box 351264, Seattle WA 98195-1264 Phone 206-543-1633 Fax 206-543-6110 joangold@uw.edu http://www.washington.edu/regents/
