Canada K1 A 0A3 ALBERTA ELECTION RESULT - MAY 5I 2015 (Signature Required) SUMMARY On May 5, 2015, the New Democratic Party (NDP), led by Rachel Notley, won 53 of 87 seats (with 41 per cent of the popular vote) to win the Alberta general election. The Wildrose Party won 21 seats to form the of?cial opposition. The Progressive Conservatives won only 11 seats, although one will be recounted. Jim Prentice immediately resigned his seat and role as leader of the Party. The Alberta Liberal Party won only 1 seat, down from its previous 5, and the Alberta Party won its ?rst seat. Voter turnout was approximately 59 per cent, the highest in recent history. In her acceptance speech, Premier-designate Notley indicated that she is looking forward to working with you and your Government in areas of importance to Alberta. Highlights of the Alberta NDP platform that pertain to areas of particular federal interest are outlined below. Background Under the title, ?Leadership for What Matters", the NDP platform (the Platform) proposed measures intended to offer an alternative approach to that presented in the Progressive Conservative budget. This included a commitment to increase the corporate tax from 10 per cent to 12 per cent and introduce a progressive personal income tax regime. The Platform also made commitments to support Alberta's agricultural sector and municipalities, and to a renewed partnership with Aboriginal people. As Alberta?s ?nances permit, the Platform also indicated that the NDP would actively support economic diversi?cation in areas such as alternative energy, high-tech and knowledge industries, among others. a; . mid; as a l?information. as 6 2015 s.19(1) 000002 Canad'?l .. - 2 - CONFIDENTIAL Commitments on the issues of energy and the environment formed a signi?cant part of the Platform as it highlighted support for the energy sector. while, at the same time. committing to establishing a commission to review Alberta's resource royalty structure. Premier-designate Notley has indicated that she would focus her efforts on supporting the Kinder-Morgan and Energy East pipelines, allowing the Northern Gateway and Keystone XL pipelines to be resolved through current regulatory processes. She also indicated a commitment to increasing upgrading capacity within the province. Key commitments related to the environment include strengthening environmental standards. inspection and monitoring and ending the investment in carbon capture and storage (C08). The NDP Platform indicated that the remaining CCS funding would be used to support public transit. It also indicated that ?rst steps would include the development of an energy ef?ciency strategy and a renewable energy strategy. The Platform committed the Party to taking leadership on climate change, but a detailed plan was not included. During her acceptance speech, however, Premier-designate Notley indicated that she will seek to work with you and premiers on a national approach to the environment and the energy sector. The Platform also included commitments related to Aboriginal communities including support for an inquiry into Missing and Murdered Aboriginal Women; and work with the federal and Aboriginal govemments on land claims, children's services and reliable access to safe drinking water.
