Body‐Worn Camera Program Fact Sheet The Department of Justice (DOJ) recognizes body-worn cameras as a law enforcement strategy aimed at improving public safety, reducing crime, and improving public trust between police and the citizens they serve. DOJ provides numerous resources to assist state, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies in developing and enhancing their body-worn camera programs. In addition to the resources listed below, the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program is a valuable resource for agencies when seeking funds to implement body-worn camera programs. BWC Policy Implementa on Program 2015 Awards Map BJA FY 2015 Body‐Worn Camera Pilot Implementa on Program Body‐Worn Camera Grant Applica ons Funding for Body‐Worn Camera Pilot Programs 285 Submi ed, 73 Awarded As part of President Obama’s commitment to expand funding and training to law enforcement agencies through community policing initiatives, the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), part of DOJ’s Office of Justice Programs (OJP), announced a $20 million Body-Worn Camera (BWC) Pilot Implementation Program in May 2015 to respond to the immediate needs of local and tribal law enforcement organizations. OJP enhanced the funding to the BWC Pilot Implementation Program by adding over $2.5 million, allowing BJA to exceed its target of 50 agencies by making 73 awards. Body‐Worn Cameras 55,000 Requested, 21,000 Awarded BJA processed 285 applications from 42 states, the District of Columbia, and tribal governments. These applicants requested over $56 million in federal funds and sought the purchase of over 55,000 cameras. The selected training and technical assistance provider, CNA, will assist BJA to provide oversight, training, and performance management. Body‐Worn Camera Toolkit Online Resource Guide The BJA Body-Worn Camera Implementation Toolkit is an online resource for stakeholders that includes lessons learned for implementation, model policies and procedures, and research materials.
