SPECIAL BRANCH THREAT ASSESSMENT NEWS INTERNATIONAL PRINT DISPUTE DAILY OVERVIEW WEDNESDAY 14TH MAY 1986 1. Next Saturday night's march from Tower Hill to Wapping will take place amid growing signs that at least one of the principal unions involved in the dispute, Sogat '82, is preparing the ground for negotiations and agreement with News International. The conduct of the national executive of Sogat '82 in recent weeks, particularly over the contempt proceedings and their 'threat' to hold a ballot on a proposed settlement to the dispute (thus circumventing the power of the London based chapel fathers), has deeply angered the sacked workers and their immediate leaders such as XXX This rift will not help the national leaders of Sogat '82 in their discussions with police concerning the conduct and control of demonstrations at Wapping. 2. It is anticipated that support for the Wednesday and Saturday marches will continue to diminish and that on Saturday 17th May no more than 2500 will take part. The march and demonstration will include the usual contingent from the ultra left - including supporters of the Socialist Workers Party, Workers Revolutionary Party and the anarchist Class War faction. In total, these extremists will not number more than 200. 3. Sogat '82 are to hold a meeting for London members in the Central Hall, Westminster, on Monday 19th May to discuss the dispute. The meeting, which will probably be chaired by XXX will be noisy and will be picketed by other interested parties.
