For Immediate Release: AUC Students mobilize to end the culture of sexual violence in the AUC or else: List of Demands: We, as students of the Atlanta University Center, will no longer stand for the erasure, neglect, and mistreatment of victims of sexual violence in the AUC. We will not allow or indulge in the continued creation of spaces that sanction rape culture and all other forms of sexual violence. We will fight for the liberation of all victims, those in heteronormative spaces and the LGBTQIA community alike, in order to ensure that no one has to endure the pain of victimization on our campuses. We will fight to hold each of our institutions accountable for their role in creating this culture of violence and will demand that they do more to protect, serve, and work for and with all students to keep us safe. We demand: 1 The immediate and swift creation of all Title IX coordinators to work in unison to handle and consult on sexual assault cases with respect to the unique colocation of Spelman and Morehouse. They must address and properly discuss ways to combat the issue of the sluggish and unproductive system of justice that neglects victims. 2 That a task force, comprised of faculty, administration, and students of Morehouse College, be created to constantly hold Morehouse accountable for their interaction and approach at lowering the amount of sexual assault cases on campus. 3 That there be a legal representative for all students who need to report an incident of sexual assault, battery, or rape be kept on retainer for students of the AUC. 4 That students of same-gender sexual assault receive a higher standard of support and treatment after reporting their cases. (This specific doctrine is created to deal with same sex assault cases considering the very close nature of the accused to the victim). 5 That the administration of all three institutions take new steps towards making sure that they are not only compliant, but excelling in following the Campus Save Act. This will be done by altering the ADW, FYE, and Freshman Orientation curriculum to speak specifically to the issues of sexual violence and gender fluidity. 6 That two or more Convocations and Crown Forums are dedicated to issues of consent, sexual violence, sexual relationships, and healthy relationships. We demand that there be an assignment on the correct language of sex. 7 The immediate cessation of harmful, victim-blaming information from all three campus police departments, including telling students how to dress to “prevent rape.” We demand that the material for these places be reviewed by the task force at both Spelman and Morehouse. 8 That better and more widespread placement of the sexual assault hotline number be available to all students, specifically in residence halls and common areas around the campuses. 9 That all forms of sexual violence - sexual harassment, sexual assault, suggestive language, coercion, rape, etc - be dealt with in a very serious manner. 10 The removal of the photo of Bill Cosby from the Morehouse College Financial Aid office. 11 That every RSO on both Spelman’s and Morehouse’s campuses develop at least 2 events per year to discuss and combat sexual violence on campus. 12 More well versed and interactive education of Title IX be placed in the education process of NSO activities. 13 That the Board of Trustees of both Spelman and Morehouse attend Title IX training and dedicate specific members to being advocates for students rights in regards to sexual violence. We the students of the Atlanta University Consortium deliver these demands in good faith that the administration of our three institutions will take them seriously, respect our wishes, and implement the changes, committees, and initiatives mentioned in a swift, timely, and productive manner. By delivering these demands, we extend a hand and an agreement to work closely with the faculty and administration within these three institutions to solve the very serious issue of sexual violence and the culture that harbors such offences. W We demand a response by the Presidents and administration of both Spelman College and Morehouse College by Tuesday, November 17th, 2016. "It is our duty to fight for our freedom. It is our duty to win.We must love each other and support each other. We have nothing to lose but our chains.”- Assata Shakur -with revolutionary love, members of the AUC.
