On Saturday 29th September 1984 thirty supporters of the Anti?Apartheid Movement (AAM) marched from Twickenham British Rail Station to the rugby football ground at Twickenham{ The march had been called to direct attention to the apartheid attitude of the South African government particularly in the area of sport. 2. AAM members together with a handful of City.of London Anti-Apartheid Group (CLAAG) and two Young Liberals set off from Twickenham Station at 1310 hours and made the short walk to the ground. The object of the protest was a match between an England XV and a Presidents XV which contained five South African players. The irony of the demonstration was not lost on rugby enthusiasts who were aware that two of the South Africans were black. 3. Once at the ground they assembled by Gate 3 in two lines so that?psople attending the match had to run the gauntlet-of their Shouts of "don't support apartheid Sport". The demonstrators in turn received some abuse from a number of large rugby supporters who had obviously recently adjourned frOm.a1ocal host?lry.At 3.00 pm, kick off time, the demonstration dispersed. Observation was however, maintained inside the ground, but no untoward incidents occurred. The planned meeting and speeches at Chase Bridge School did not materialize probably because of the lack of support from AAM members. Of those present only and were positively identified.
