Statement from Concordia University College of Alberta in Edmonton. (The school is one of the schools that has received zero reports of sexual assaults on students for the years 2009 to 2014. After CBC News published its story, the school responded with the statement below). Concordia University of Edmonton places the highest priority on the safety and well-being of our students, staff and visitors to campus. Sexual violence or harassment is not tolerated. Concordia is a proud participant in the “I Believe You” campaign. Working in partnership with the Alberta Association of Sexual Assault Services and the Government of Alberta, this initiative strives to enhance the reporting environment for cases of sexual violence or harassment. In support of the “I Believe You” campaign, Concordia University of Edmonton offers immediate resources to victims of such incidents including on-campus psychologists and counsellors, as well as academic accommodations and options. The reporting of an incident of sexual violence or harassment is a deeply personal decision made by the victim. Concordia has policies in place reflective of today’s post-secondary campuses and robust support networks ready to support a victim’s needs. Each term, students are educated on Concordia’s “culture of consent” through campus-wide dialogue about healthy sexual activity and consent. Concordia University of Edmonton affirms a proactive approach to sexual violence and harassment will result in a supportive reporting environment. Concordia is committed to preventing, and responding to sexual violence with proactive policies, supports and education. Dr. Barbara van Ingen, Dean of Students, Concordia University of Edmonton (formerly Concordia University of Alberta).
