STATEMENT FROM NEW YORK CITY COMPTROLLER SCOTT STRINGER TO PROPUBLICA ABOUT PREVAILING WAGES FOR 421-A BUILDING SERVICE WORKERS: “It’s clear that there is a need for better enforcement of prevailing wage in the existing 421-a program. Whether it’s carpenters on City construction sites or cleaners in City schools, my office has a tried and tested program in place for prevailing wage enforcement. With 421-a, step 1 will be working with HPD to identify which buildings qualify under the law. Step 2 will be an extensive outreach campaign throughout the City to make sure that workers in these buildings know their rights and know how to contact our office to confidentially report potential violations. It’s important to remember that this is a complaint-driven process. If any worker out there believes they are entitled to prevailing wages, we will bring the full weight and resources of the Comptroller’s office to ensure compliance with the law.” -New York City Comptroller Scott M.
