We kayaked into the bay and then worked on technical kayaking skills such as correcting o'oepsieed kayak and generally playing games. in all, it took us about one hour from the time we set off until we? landed the kayaks at the Captain Cook Monument. We next went on a hike to the Monument led by guide, Ola. He told us about the different ?ora and vegetation along the way. Ola took charge because he grew up in the area and said he ?knows it like the back of his hand." We arrived at the actual Monument wound 10:00 semi, and spent the next several hours snorkeling in the bay. I The group started limch around 1:30 pm. I stsyed with Letishe, Kelsey and several cmnpets, end Ola took the others With their lunch to some pools that had small ?sh and shrimp-in it. We ?nished around 2:30 pm. I remember seeing 2:36 pm. on my watch. After lunch, I noticed some other guides in the area were beginning to leave. Ioalled the kids over and told them to organize themselves and their-gear to make the exiting process from the bay as easy as possible. Several of the kids grabbed their gear (several had even put their life jackets on). At that point, Ola walked over to me; indicated that dinner would not be ready for a while and asked us if we wanted to go snorkeling or biking. Ola soothed to be encouraging us to go hike Where we woold have great views of the coastline and we could 363 some blowholes. At one point while W6 were on the lava ?eld, Ola said ?you guys are seeing the real Hawaii.? we reached a tree line apprertimately 30 feet the shore. [remember Tyler Madoff said thanks to me at this point for lending him my long sleeved Under Arinour shirt. He hadn?t worn a shirt that day, and I had given it to him when we got out of the water after our snorkel became his shoulders were 7 getting red. Once we made our way through the tree line a cliff side opened itself Up to us. As we hiked down the coastline, I noticed some waves, but nothing like what hit us later. These Waves just kind of sprayed us. As we eXplored the coast line, Latisha had some kids link arms and wait for the waves to splash us all and Ole condoned to lead us new south down the shoreline, beck in the direction of the kayaks. During this part of the hike, We saw tidal pools of di??erent sizes and depths that he called ?queen?s baths?: We let the students sit in them and con?rmed to explore them as a group. I never got the impression from Ole or La?sha that what we were doing was in any way dangerous. Ola continued to lead us southbound, the students followed him, and Kelsey, .Latisha, and myself up the rear. Toward the end of female students plusKelsey, Latisha, and myself stopped to sit in one queen?s bath. Ola and the remaining students walked ahead, and set in a larger queen?s bath about 15 yards away. We thought we could all ?t in that larger pool, so i got out of the pool I was in and directed those campers and leaders to head to the pool where Ola and the others were. is when the waves hit; . I litiidn?t actually see the waves, but they fully covered the group (which was, at the time, . 15 feet above end 30 feet hack from'the shore line), and a "sheet" of water crashed down on me with enormous force, submerging me.. As its water receded I turned back to the bath I tees to to make sure the others were safe. Kelsey I had one student named Charlotte and Letlsha had the other two students by their bikini bottoms. As I turned hack from them, now to the south, the second wave hit. I lowered my?elf again and held on. the water teceded out I made my way as quickly as possible to the larger pool where I knew Ola was alone with nine campers. {was shouting to everyone to retreat to the east back to the tree line. I I Was continuing to the larger pool when the thind wave struck, I hunkered down1 then managed to reach the pool as the water was receding back into the ocean. As I approached it, I saw Tyler being sucked out of the bath with the receding water. i was too far away fi?om him to make any attempt at saving him. He was moving too quickly and I was too far away, maybe lO~ 15 feet from him. His face was emotionless and he was making no e?ort to save himself. I assumed he?d been knocked unconscious. Since I saw Tyler go (10% ilcnew we had at least one student in the water.? Ola and i searched the immediate area. Ola spotted a body in the water and dove in. The victimwas a passive, face down, victim. As Ola executed the roll, I realized it was Matt Alzete, so I continued to search the immediate area for Tyler alonngith Latisha. Latisha and I also ?agged down a nearby ?shing boat to aid ?zz-Matt's rescue. They tinew Ole a lifevest, circled around, and lifted Matt and Ole aboard. As that was happening Latisha and searched the immediate area for Tyler and after 10?15 minutes, expanded our search up and down the coastline.
