fifM//<* of. v f United States Senate WASHINGTON, DC 20510 PAiiOox h? i UP;HEY January 12, 2001 Mr. Roger C. Adams Pardon Attorney 500 1st Street NW Suite 400 Washington, D.C. 20530 Dear Mr. Adams: We write in support of the petition to grant a pardon to former United States District Court Judge Wj$pigLl Nixofi, Jr., of Biloxi, Mississippi. Walter Nixon's pardon petition has been pending before the Department of Justice for over two years. He is seeking pardon from the crime of perjury before a grand jury, although he was acquitted of the matter under investigation by the grand jury. Since his conviction, eventual disbarment, and service of sentence, Walter Nixon has been readmitted to practice law in the State of Mississippi and all federal courts in the area. By requirement of Mississippi law, his petition for readmission was thoroughly reviewed by the Mississippi Supreme Court. His readmission was supported by many leading members of the Mississippi Bar and the judiciary and several public officials. He has redeemed himself and maintained a successful law practice and active involvement in his community. For these reasons, we believe former Judge Walter L. Nixon, Jr., should receive a pardon and hope that you can expedite a determination of this petition. We thank you for consideration of this request. Sincerely, A L THAD COCHRAN United States Senator TRENT LOTT United States Senator U. S. D e p a r t m e n t of J u s t i c e Pardon Attorney Washington, D.C. 20530 APR - 4 2001 The Honorable Trent Lott Majority Leader United States Senate Washington, D.C. 20510-2401 Dear Mr. Majority Leader: This is in response to your March 19, 2001, letter concerning the status of the pardon application o f your constituent, Roy Mattina. The processing time for a pardon application is lengthy, and Mr. Martina's application still is under consideration. Although the responsibility for investigating pardon applications has been delegated to personnel o f the Department o f Justice, the power to grant pardons is vested in the President alone, and w e can give no assurance that final action will be taken by the President within a particular time frame. Accordingly, w e are unable to advise you or Mr. Mattina when a decision may be expected on his application. He will be notified promptly, however, when this occurs. I appreciate your continued interest in this matter, and w e will also notify you when final action is taken. Sincerely, Roger C. Adams Pardon Attorney
