Nixon, Jr., of Biloxi, Mississippi. Walter Nixon's pardon petition has bean pending before the Department of Justice for over two years. He is seeking pardon from the crime of perjury before a grand juiy, although he was acquitted of the matter under investigation by the grand jury Since his conviction, eventual disbarment, and service of sentence, Walter Nixon has been readmitted to practice law in the State of Mississippi and all federal courts in the area. By requirement of Mississippi law, his petition for readmission was thoroughly reviewed by the Mississippi Supreme Court. His readmission was supported by many leading members of the Mississippi Bar and the judiciary and several public officials. He has redeemed himself and maintained a successful law practice and active involvement in his community. For these reasons, we believe former Judge Walter L. Bruce is a strong supporter of higher education and always took the initiative about encouraging and helping young people attend college. Unfortunately, there is not much I can add to my letter to you of October 17, 2002, although since that time Mr. Hill has been interviewed by the FBI as part of the background investigation the Office of the Pardon Attorney requests in some pardon cases. His application is still pending and, as I have noted, the processing time for a clemency matter can be lengthy. However, we will notify Mr. Hill promptly once a decision has been made in his case, and I will ensure that you are notified quickly as well. I appreciate your continuing interest in Mr. Hill's case. Attached are Dr. and Mrs. Britton's pardon requests. Because Dr. Britton is 82 years old and has paid his sentence in full, and because Mrs. Britton is 50 years old and paid her sentence in full and cannot find gainful employment with felony charges on her record, I hope you will expedite your consideration. Dr. Britton is seeking a pardon from the crime of filing false Medicaid claims. He received three years probation, paid a $5,000 fine, and made restitution of $2,533. Mrs. Britton served as her husband's office manager and plead guilty to misfiling Medicaid claims and withholding information in a crime. She received two years probation and a $1,000 fine. A number of Mississippians have spoken on behalf of Dr. and Mrs. Britton since their convictions, and believe they deserve pardons based on the remote nature of their crimes and their service to their church and community. Dr. and Mrs. Britton have accepted full responsibility for their wrongdoing and I believe both should receive a pardon. Thank you for your consideration of this request.
