REPORT OF THE CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF REGENTS: Regent Aye:- NotlcedAction: Selection of a Public Enuitoyee and Related Delegations The selection of the University President is the most important duty of the Board of Regents. Beginning in March, the Board committed to a deliberate and inclusive process to ?nd therigh't President for the University at this time in its history and to taking whatever time was required to do that. We took several initial steps: 1) the Board asked Chancellor Emeritus Kenyon Chan to serve as Chair of a search advisory committee comprised of 28 individuals representing all segments of the-university community including ?ve students, six faculty members, six administrators or sta?,? six community leaders, and four Regents, with students and faeulty ?om all three campuses. I 2) We engaged a search consultant named John Thornburgh from the itt/Kie?er Executive Search ?rm. 3) Regents held a series of open forums in Seattle, Bothell. Tacoma, and Spokane, to hear perspectives from faculty, sta?f students, and others about the ?tture of the University and its leadership needs. 4) We care?tlly developed .a Presidential Leadershio Pro?le t? hold it 1322 identizying the criteria for a President given the opportunities and . challenges of this University as we look ahead. Specifically, quote, "an experienced forward-looking, and progressive leader with an evident passionfor the mission and future. Juarez, and Norm Beauchamp. Last week the Board held a special meeting and met in executive session to evaluate the qualifications of candidates for the position of President of the University. We seek a strong leader who best ?ts the qualities outlined in the Leadership Profile. We seek a candidate with outstanding and inspiring leadership qualities who, as we stated in the pro?le, "should embrace the mission of this world-class public universin and convey an absolute and genuine personal commitment to the success. I am very pleased to invite Regent Blake to make a motion regarding selection of the next President of the University of Washington. Regent Blake will make the motion and comment.
