Fm. 6645 JUN - 4 2015 Ames, Iowa I at CITY CLERK CITY OF AMES. IOWA June 1, 2015 Dear Honorable Mayor and Members of the Ames City Council, There are currently no regulations governing protesters or public demonstrations in the City of Ames. 1 would ask that city stafflook into whether regulations are needed or what current regulations can be more effectively enforced to ensure the safety of our citizens and protect the rights ofour business owners. I feel compelled to bring this issue to your attention after observing a group of protesters in the 400 block of Burnett Street on several occasions. I have observed this group blocking sidewalks with a number of large dogs, dog beds, dog bowls, lawn chairs, and personal items and blocking access to city parking meters. I have also received complaints that this group allows their small children to roam unsupervised in the area, creating the potential for a tragedy. I spent 20 years working as a journalist and VERY ?rmly believe in the right to free speech but I also believe that these demonstrators should be required to adhere to the laws set forth by the city of Ames. I am also concerned about protecting the rights ofbusiness owners who pay taxes and attract visitors to our fair city. Thank you very much for your time and consideration. Sincerely, Cindy Hi?ks Executive Director Main Street Cultural District 304 Main Street, Ames, IA 50010 515.233.3472 AmesDowntown.org MSCD is an affiliate organization of the Ames Chamber of Commerce
