ANTICIPATORY SET Good morning/afternoon my name is Jeffrey Jones I’m a police officer with Baltimore City School Police. We told to often that we as police officers are not sensitive to the cultures in our community that we patrol each and every day. Today we will talk a little about what we as police officers need to think about while we are on patrol. Something’s we need to change about the way we think as police officers, as well as learn more about the cultures in our patrol areas. the objective that I will cover in this are: PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES Define some terminology. (C-1) Identifying elements that make up a culture. (C-1) Discuss some elements of cultures. (C-2) Classifying what a culture is. (C-2) Discuss some data. (C-2) Examine different culture. (C-3) Examine how to understand some cultures. (C-3) 5 This lesson plan is Intended to provide law enforcement officers with a understanding of different cultures. PPS-2-3 II. INSTRUCTIONAL INPUT (CONTENT) Ask the class if anyone can define culture? the beliefs, customs, arts, etc., of a particular society, group, place, or time Give the class time to answer the question PPS-4and 5 : A particular society that has its own beliefs, ways of life, art etc. : A way of thinking, behaving, or working that exist in a place or organization (such as a business) Ask the class if anyone can define sensitivity? the tendency to become upset about things that are done to you, are said about you, or relate to you PPS-5 : the tendency to cause people to be upset : an awareness and understanding of the feelings of other people Talk about what elements that make up a culture Behavior - What is done? The first thing the alien notices is the behavior of the people and their activities, dressing style, attitudes, etc. Some people may be standing, some sitting and may be listening to a person, some might be playing, etc. By simply observing these activities he is unable to understand the logic behind them. Values - What is good or best? On asking them about the reasons for their activities, he comes to know that people chose to indulge in activities that are considered good. This differentiation of good or best comes from 'values'. Values represent the duties or activities that one 'ought to do' or 'should do' to be in sync with the pattern of life. Beliefs - What is true? On further interrogation he realizes that these values are not decided arbitrarily but stem from 'beliefs'. He finds out that 6 PPS-6-10 certain beliefs (operating beliefs) greatly influence the values and behavior, whereas certain beliefs (theoretical beliefs) have very less practical impact on values and behavior. Hence, certain people may have a different set of beliefs but behave in a similar manner, and vice versa. Worldview - What is real? The deepest level of understanding that forms the basis for a particular set of beliefs is 'worldview'. Worldview implies the way we interpret reality, and refers to the way we see ourselves, relative to the world. It includes the ideas behind the meaning and reasons for human existence, the notions of evil, divine and supernatural. Discuss some elements of cultures Language Language, be it spoken, written, or gestured, is the basic means of communication between humans. It would be safe to say that language has evolved along with humans, originating with a combination of basic sounds, calls, and gestures to coherent speech, scripts, accents, and dialects. Rough estimates tell us that between 5000 to 7000 languages exist in our world today. Its function has long exceeded its basic use of communication. Languages now serve as a means of cultural identity, entertainment, and social status, grooming, and refinement. Social Structure In a broad sense, social structure or organization refers to a pattern of relationships between and among individuals and groups. These relationships or groups are created to augment the smooth functioning of society. Examples include nuclear and extended families, brotherhoods and sororities, labor unions, corporate organizations, governments, etc. Customs and Traditions Customs and traditions influence and govern each aspect of our behavior. These may be informal or formal in nature, and tend to vary from region to region. Customs develop over a long period, taking shape from our beliefs and lifestyles. They also tend to shift, evolve, and disappear as time progresses; but one aspect remains consistent―that these customs and rituals are an integral part of our evolutionary process and social behavior. Arts Human emotions and ideas have always found the perfect medium of expression in the arts. Arts encompass a wide range of forms, including literature, crafts, architecture, music, dance, dramatics, etc. The arts can be called the most vital aspect of human culture, as it signifies all that we have achieved in the past. It also serves as a useful medium for 7 PPS-11-15 cultural preservation aimed at future generations. Classifying what a culture is PPS-16-17 Discuss some data Baltimore is the largest city in Maryland and the 26th largest city in the United States.
