March 9, 2016 Dear Parents, Thank you to the parents who met with our regional team today to express questions regarding a recent social media post by one of our students. We understand this situation has caused concern and we appreciate the opportunity to provide updated information to families. First, let me assure you that your child was well supported today. As the team visited classrooms, I was impressed by the personalized attention teachers were giving to students. A counselor will be on campus tomorrow and will remain here for the rest of this week to ensure students receive the support needed to feel secure and focused on learning. I want to also inform you of actions taken today on campus to strengthen the safety and security of our school. • Our facilities expert was on campus today checking and reinforcing all perimeter fencing, building access points, gates, and classroom doors. • In conjunction with our Governing Board, we have begun a review to further refine and improve our Student Code of Conduct and Discipline Policy to adopt at a future meeting. • We have conducted meetings with our middle school students to reinforce behavior expectations and the concept of “if you see something, say something.” • A crisis counselor will be on campus and available to any student who needs extra support. They are also visiting classrooms to look for indicators that signal a need for additional follow up. These counselors will be on campus for the remainder of the week. • We have started the process of meeting with students in each grade level to reinforce our emphasis on safety and reassure all students that our school is a safe place. • Law enforcement has been on campus today and local law enforcement will be on campus through the rest of this week and all of next week during school hours. We are also finalizing a contract to have a security guard on campus for the remainder of this school year. • A meeting was conducted after school today to inform our teachers and staff members of this situation and review our safety procedures and answer all questions. Finally, I want to inform you that the student in question no longer attends our school. Because of student privacy concerns, we will not be offering any further details on this issue but did want to make you aware of this fact. Parents, please be assured that our highest priority remains the safety of our students. We will continue to work on reviewing and strengthening policies that improve both student safety and parent communication. Thank you for your continued partnership with Imagine South Vero. As always, please feel free to reach out to me with any questions you may have. Cordially, Jennifer Fornes Regional Director (407) 908-5169 Jennifer.Fornes@imagineschools.org
