631 S. ADAMS - P.O. BOX 1210 Green Bay, WI 54305-1210 920-448-3480 FAX 920-448-3486 March 7, 2016 Dear Green Bay Water Utility Customer, Your property is among the approximately 1,750 in the City of Green Bay with lead water service lines. With recent national attention focused on reported cases of lead in drinking water in other cities, we want to assure you that Green Bay Water Utility is actively working to remove all lead water service lines as part of our long-term lead abatement program. Currently, fewer than 5% of Green Bay Water Utility service lines are made of lead. Through our ongoing water main and service line replacement program, we will continue to replace lead service lines as quickly as budget allows in order to meet our goal of having zero lead water service lines in the city. As a reminder, lead is NOT found in Green Bay’s source water, Lake Michigan, nor is lead in Green Bay Water Utility’s treated drinking water. Your water meets all federal guidelines for safety, and the City of Green Bay will ensure it remains that way. However, lead can enter the water as a result of the wearing away of materials containing lead in service lines or internal plumbing. When water stands for several hours in fixtures or pipes that contain lead, the lead may leach into the water. The amount of lead will vary depending on how much and how often water is used in your home. Please see the enclosed Brown County Health Department brochure for steps you can take to further reduce your risk of lead exposure. These actions are especially important for children in your household under the age of 6 and women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
