America March 15, 2016 The Honorable Joseph Manchin, 306 Hart Senate Office Building Washington, DC. 20510 Dear Senator Manchin: I?m writing to clarify what I said recently regarding coal communities at a CNN town hall. Simply put, I was mistaken in my remarks. I wanted to make the point that, as you know too well, while coal will be part of the energy mix for years to come, both in the US. and around the world, we have already seen a long-term decline in American coal jobs and a recent wave of bankruptcies as a result of a changing energy market? and we need to do more to support the workers and families facing these challenges. You know my history and the depth of my commitment to our coal?eld workers, families, and communities. I feel so strongly that we need to stand with those who have kept America?s lights on and factories humming for generations. That's why I?ve been outspoken over the course of this campaign about protecting the benefits that our mine workers earned and deserve, and why our country must honor our commitment to those workers by passing your Miners Protection Act. And it?s why I prioritized releasing a comprehensive plan for revitalizing coal communities, including investments in infrastructure, education, locally driven economic development, and carbon capture and sequestration along with hydropower, wind, and solar. I pledge to you that I will focus my team and Administration on bringing jobs to Appalachia, especially jobs producing the carbon capture technology we need for the future. As this campaign continues, I look forward to consulting with you on how we can help coal communities in West Virginia and across the country build the future they deserve. Please know that my team will follow up with your staff to further discuss how we can continue working together.
