As we discuased, my complaint was filed against Coach Campbell regarding the incident our son witnessed. Due to their race. Coach Campbell brought a few African American students to the front of the room during study hall and compared them to an African American signing group. My child is currently in a hostile environment on the football ?eld at Centennial High School. This environment is hostile because: 1. Coach Campbell continues to make racially charged comments. 2. Principal Spain and Coach Mullins have not reassigned Coach Campbell until a thorough investigation into the incidents reported has been completed. 3. The lack of action by Principal Spain or Coach Mullins seems to indicate that they are willing to tolerate a racist climate on the football ?eld. 4. My child feels threatened and the target of retaliation because Coach Campbell is still over my son on the football ?eld. Our request is simple. We request Coach Campbell be reassigned immediately. We request that the entire program be revamped to foster Inclusion of all races. We await your response as enough time ?as passed with our child being intimidated and marginalized. Thereason that i am writing this letter is that overthe course of the last two years here, i have been informed hv?sever'al players th at see me around that-there have been some comments by Coach Campbell that they felt were racially insensitive and demeaning to them. Examples of these comments include: 1. Coach told a kid that he is getting big, he must be eating fried chicken 2. This is obviously a systematic fo rm of discrimination that: he is consciously choosing to practice. .- When .Coach Mullins came on board as the Head Football Coach in April, i saw this as an opportunity to deal with this issue. So, i setup a meeting-with myself, and Coach Mullins. At that time, i brought to Coach Mullins? attention that Coach Campbell had made the statementsaboutan athlete getting bigger'b?ecause he was eating fried chicken; and about him putting my and another athlete'ln front of his study hall claSs and comparing them to a black rap group. i explained to Ceach Mullins that this was offensive to African Americans for several reasons and that this behavior should not be tolerated by any adult, let alone a teacher who is getting paid by public tax dollars. Coach Mullins assured me that he would investigate the situation-and correct the problem. I later heard that Coach Mullins did address-the team and coaching Staffin regards to making negative statements towards each other andthe kids. 1 assumed that- he addressed Coach Campbell personally. But, i must admit, i made theassumption that this wasthe case. i found out almost-a week'later that Coach?Camp'be'il?s position had been changed to RB Coach and'th?at he Would be directly over that came forth-With th? accusation. When i heard this,- I immediately reached out to Coach Mullins to let him know that i did not like this decision and that-it made and myself uncomfortable asWe were afraid CC would retaliate against . Coach Mullinstold me that he didn?t feel that he had to justify his decisions on who he has coaching where with me or anybody else. After a bit of arguing, I decided to get off the phone and deal with it later. Coach Mullins saw me at the 7-on-7 the next day and apologized for his response. But, he kept CC as 3 RB coach. At about noon, i still had not heard from Coach Mullins, so, i called and left a message asking for a status on the situation. After almost an hour, I decided to head up to the school to escalate to Mr. Spain as i felt that the issue was not being taken seriously and that no real action had occurred all day. Mr. Spain assured methat he would look into the situation and get back to me and/or have Coach Mullins get back to me. Mr. Spaintold me-that if Coach Campbell did make-these statements that he would deal with him. He told 'me that if that behavior continues; that he wouldn?t. be in'this profession any longer. My plays football for the Titans and is in To give you an idea on my perspective on the Titan program. i am very active when it comes to my experience with the program. So, I am someone who has become a familiar face to a lot of the players. The reason that I am writing this letter is that over the course of the last two years here, i have been informed by several players that see me around that there have been some comments by Coach Campbell that they felt were racially insensitive and demeaning to them. Examples of these comments include: 1. Coach told a kid that he is getting big, he must be eating fried chicken 2. CC asked a couple of football players to come to the front of the class during study hall; had them stand in front of a projector; turned on a slide of New Edition and compared these kids to the rap group CC told a kid that he would string him up on a tree upside down CC has reminded kids that he has a glock on his shelf at home CC continually referred to a black kid as Malcolm CC called a white kid cracker CC called who he thought was a Hispanic kid 'Essay? He continuously puts these kids that he picks on down during practice while awarding unequitable praise to the ?chosen? kids when they do the bare minimum. This is obviously a systematic form of discrimination that he is consciously choosing to practice. averages? When Coach Mullins came on board as the Head Football Coach in April, 1 saw this as an opportunity to deal with this issue. So, I set up a meeting with myself, and Coach Mullins. At that time, i brought to Coach Mullins? attention that Coach Campbell had made the statements about an athlete getting bigger because he was eating fried chicken; and about him putting my nephew and another athlete in front of his study hall class and comparing them to a black rap group. i explained to Coach Mullins that this was offensive to African Americans for several reasons and that this behavior should not be tolerated by any adult, let alone a teacher who is getting paid by public tax dollars. Coach Mullins assured me that he would investigate the situation and correct the problem. I later heard that Coach Mullins did address the team and coaching staff in regards to making negative statements towards each other and the kids. assumed that he addressed Coach Campbell personally. But, I must admit, i made the assumption that this was the case. I found out almost a week later that Coach Campbell?s position had been changed to R8 Coach and that he would be directly over the kid that came forth with the accusation. When i heard this, I immediately reached out to Coach Mullins to let him know that i did not like this decision and that it made and myself uncomfortable as we were afraid CC would retaliate against Coach Mullins told me that he didn?t feel that he had to justify his decisions on who he has coaching where with me or anybody else. After a bit of arguing, i decided to get off the phone and deal with it later. Coach Mullins saw me at the 7-on-7 the next day and apologized for his response. But, he kept CC as RB coach. Fast Forward to October 13th. I received a call from with< ANONYMOUS on the phone. was really upset because Coach Campbell had been harassing him over the past couple of Weeks. He had been on for what considered to be no real reason, and he had been calling him ?Malcolm as a way of insulting him. was fed up with the harassment and was ready to quit Titan football altogether. and discussed with him that we could go to Coach Mullins on his behalf to try to get some resolution on why CC had been making these statements. i verified through my that this was something that several players heard Coach Campbell say so I called Coach Mullins. Coach Mullins wanted to setup a time with the kids to hear their statements. When i asked could and i be present, he stated that he only wanted the kids involved in the room. i expressed my disagreement with this decision. I felt that it was unfair to question the kids without an advocate. i was reminded that was not my kid. 1 Was asked to give Coach Mullins an opportunity to resolve the situation and that he would get back to me to let me know that it was resolved. Over the course of the next morning, Coach Mullins questioned and regarding the issue. I was in communication with during this period via txt. At about noon, I still had not heard from Coach Mullins, so, i called and left a message asking for a status on the situation. After almost an hour, i decided to head Up to the school to escalate to Mr. Spain as i felt that the issue was not being taken seriously and that no real action had occurred all day. Mr. Spain assured me that he would look into the situation and get back to me and/or have Coach Mullins get back to me. Mr. Spain told me that if Coach Campbell did make these statements that he would deal with him. He told me that if that behavior continues, that he wouldn?t be in this profession any longer. He made the statement that Coach Campbell would be given three chances and that he was gone after that. i thought to myself, that is crazy. If i were to make this kind of statement once at my place of employment, I would be fired immediately. was once again assured that they would get back to me. So, I went back to work. The rest of the afternoon went by and no one reached out to me with an explanation of how they were going to handle the situation. 80, I came back up to the school during football practice. Sure enough, that was when Coach Mullins came off the field with an explanation of how he handled things. After a brief explanation of how he felt he resolved the situation, i was told that he didn?t appreciate me going to his boss about this. i told him that i did n?t appreciate the fact that he didn?t get back to me. And i felt that he didn't take this issue seriously. We agreed to disagree and essentially went our ways. After practice was over, i waited for as i usually do. and pproached me and stated that they were not allowed to give their true statement and that they were ?talked? over by Coach Mullins. Coach Mullins had framed the situation into a single occurrence and NOT something that been occurring over the course of a couple of weeks as reported to myself and questioned several times about how often this happened and he assured me that it happened over the course of several weeks. As a result of the conversation with i decided to reach back out to Coach Muilins and request another meeting to talk about how this was . handled. After discussing this with we decided to request an additional meeting with Coach Mullins to attempt to resolve this. Coach Mullins? response was that the probiem was appropriately handled and resolved and that there would be no further meetings on this issue. I replied that i did not think that it was fairly reSDIVed since the kids said they were not ailowed to speak and that it couldn?t be resoived without consensus from parties. At this point, i was unsatisfied with the response. and i decided that we would escalate back to Mr. Spain. Now, i am also disappointed with Mr. Spain because, tothis day, he has never gotten back to me to see if this issue was resolved. I escalated to him because i felt that things were not getting handled properly. I feel that he should have stayed with the issue and communicated with me until we agreed that it was resolved. To me, this communicates that the staff at Centennial High School believes there is no real probiem with a Coach making racially charged statements to a kid. And that all this school cares about is protecting the coach?s job. Not only did Coach Campbell make racist statements, when he toid another ANONYMOUS kid he would ?Hang him from a tree?, he made a threat of violence against that child. As of today, 11/3/2015, almost three weeks has gone by without any attempt to ensure that that child?s safety is of any importance. This is absolutely not right. I have to wonder if a non~black kid would be treated in this same In the opinion of the over 50 people that attended the meeting with Mr. Spain and Coach Mullins on 10/27/2015, Coach Campbeil should be fired from his position and a Coach and Teacher in the Frisco Furthermore, Mr. Spain and Coach Mullins need to be held accountable for their lack of action in regards to this matter. A more expedient program that increases diversity within the FISD in regards to positions of leadership. Specifically Head Football Coaches and Principals. Transparency into the hiring process of all Administrators within the Signed: Clyde Anderson 11/9/2015 Addendums/ Emails Hello All, My name is . My plays football for the Titans and is in his senior year. To give you an idea on my perspective on the Titan program. CC asked a couple of football players to come to the front of the class during study hall; had them stand in front of a projector; turned on a slide of New Edition and compared these kids to the rap group CC told a kid that he would string him up on a tree upside down CC has reminded kids that he has a glock on his shelf at home CC continually referred to a black kid as Malcolm CC called a white kid cracker CC called who he thought was a Hispanic kid ?Essay? He continuously puts these kids that he picks on down during practice while awarding unequitable praise to the ?chosen? kids when they do the bare minimum. This is obviously a systematic form of discrimination that he is consciously choosing to practice. When Coach Mullins came on board as the Head Football Coach in April, 3 saw this as an opportunity to deal with this issue. So, I set up a meeting with myself, my and Coach Mullins. At that time, i brought to Coach Mullins? attention that Coach Campbell had made the statements about an athlete getting bigger because he was eating fried chicken; and about him putting my and another athlete in front of his study hall class and comparing them to a black rap group. I explained to Coach Mullins that this was offensive to African Americans for several reasons and that this behavior should not be tolerated by any adult, let alone a teacher who is getting paid by public tax dollars. Coach Mullins assured me that he would investigate the situation and correct the problem. 1 later heard that Coach Mullins did address the team and coaching staff in regards to making negative statements towards each other and the kids. 1 assumed that he addressed Coach Campbell personally. But, must admit, i made the assumption that this was the case. i found out almost a week laterthat Coach Campbell?s position had been changed to RB Coach and that he would be directly over the kid that came forth with the accusation. When i heard this, i immediately reached out to Coach Mullins to let him know that I did not like this decision and that it made and myself uncomfortable as we were afraid CC would retaliate against . Coach Mullins told me that he didn?t feel that he had to justify his decisions on who he has coaching where with me or anybody else. After a bit of arguing, I decided to get off the phone and deal with it later. Coach Mullins saw me at the 7~on~7 the next day and apologized for his response. Ra nthony and I discussed with him that we could go to Coach Mullins on his behalf to try to get some resolution on why CC had been making these statements. verified through my that this was something that several players heard Coach Campbell say so I called Coach Mullins. Coach Mullins wanted to setup a time with the kids to hear their statements. When i asked could and i be present, he stated that he only wanted the kids involved in the room. 1 expressed my disagreement with this decision. i felt that it was unfair to question the kids without an advocate. was reminded that was not my kid. I was asked to give Coach Mullins an opportunity to resolve the situation and that he would get back to me to let me know that it was resolved. I was once again assured that they would get back to me. So, I went back to work. The rest of the afternoon went by and no one reached out to me with an explanation of how they were going to handle the situation. So, i came back up to the school during football practice. Sure enough, that was when Coach Mullins came off the field with an explanation of how he handled things. After a brief explanation of how he felt he resolved the situation, i was told that he didn?t appreciate me going to his boss about this. I told him that i didn?t appreciate the fact that he didn?t get back to me. And I felt that he didn?t take this issue seriously. We agreed to disagree and essentially went our ways. After practice was over, I waited for as i usually do. and approached me and stated that they were not allowed to give their true statement and that they were ?talked? over by Coach Mullins. Coach Mullins had framed the situation into a single occurrence and NOT something that been occurring over the course of a couple of weeks as reported to myself and by questioned seVEral times about how often this happened and he assured me that it happened overthe course of several weeks. As a result of the conversation with I decided to reach back out to Coach Mullins and request another meeting to talk about how this was handled. After discussing this with we decided to request an additional meeting with Coach Mullins to attempt to resolve this. Coach Mullins? response was that the problem was appropriately handled and resolved and that there would be no further meetings on this issue. i replied that I did not think that it was fairly resolved since the kids said they were not allowed to speak and that it couldn?t be resoived without consensus from all parties. At this point, i was unsatisfied with the response. and i decided that we would escalate back to Mr. Spain. Now, i am also disappointed with Mr. Spain because, to this day, he has never gotten back to me to see if this issue was resolved. 1 escalated to him because i felt that things were not getting handled properly. i feel that he should have stayed with the issue and communicated with me until we agreed that it was resoived. To me, this communicates that the staff at Centennial High School believes there is no real problem with a Coach making racially charged statements to a kid. And that all this school cares about is protecting the coach?sjob. Not only did Coach Campbell make racist statements, when he told another ANONYMOUS kid he would ?Hang him from a tree', he made a threat of violence against that chiid. As of today, 11/3/2015, almost three Weeks has gone by without any attempt to ensure that that child?s safety is of any importance. Had a meeting with Citizens for positive change to nail What is expectations. There are basically 4 issues that must addressed. (1). Full investigation of the coach Campbell. (2) The group would also like a ?ll] investigation of Ronny Mullins and Mr Spain. The general feeling is Ronny Mullins withheld information from his bosses and repeatedly put kids in hostile situations. Mr Spain also did not follow the issues or react in the best interest of our kids when he had info that could have helped all parties involved. Both have broken the trust of the kids and parents when dealing with the sensitive subject of race and hostile situations. Mr Spain showed little interest to ensure an acceptable solution for all parties. (3) why can't the Coach be removed from the kids until the investigation is complete. There was no movement or follow up ?~om Randy Spain when this was a clear demand of the group. (4) A meeting with our group to talk openly about these issues when your investigation is complete. The community would like to hear from you. I told the group you are an advocate for fairness. Thanks. I greatly value and appreciate our ability to talk about serious issues affecting our community. Before i move on, I want to re-emphasize some very important points on your email that really needs to be deren home just in case these issues come up again: I have serious concerns when i learned today that 50 people showed up for a meeting with him, without his prior knowledge of that many people planning to attend. i don't think that is fair. (When issues impact kids, and Mr. Spain was very much aware that we would be talking about the issues of racial insensitive comments around our kids, it does not matter if there were 20 or 50 people. i have a documented email where I told Mr. Spain a week ago What we would be talking about and Why. He had plenty of time to prepare. The very reason he held this meeting in a library was the anticipation of a large audience An additional concern is that have learned that there are now grievances ?led by parents over matters discussed at the meeting. (The grievanee process was initiated by Randy Spain against the will of the audience. Whereae the audience understood that the campiaints needed to be documented, the request was to retrieve the mash immediately until a tell and independent investigatten ceeld be dene. Randy epain was adamant about implementing a grievance tie it he told you this, shame an him. Here is what I propose. have no hesitation and would welcome having a meeting with our assistant superintendent for HR, you, and another person to discuss issues that do not violate student con?dentiality safeguards or employee rights. I know where you stand regarding your beliefs as to what needs to happen in FISD with increasing the diversity of our workforce and i trust, given our discussions, that you know that I agree with you. There are racial allegations deriving from the football program that we believe has created an environment that's not good for our kids. Approximately 50 people from the community showed up at Centennial High School to discuss this situation with Mr Spain, Ronny Mullins and David K. Of course this all ties back to a lack of diversity at the school over many years. We would welcome you or a representative from the Frisco ISD to sit in and here our concerns. Thanks, ?23: mm pm
