One synthetic light blue fiber was found on Item 22B-1 that could not be eliminated from Item 27A known fibers based on color and delusterant, however, due to the damaged condition of the unknown fiber, further analysis was not possible and therefore, it is inconclusive if Item 27A could be the source of the unknown light blue fiber in Item 22B-1 (Inconclusive). All other fibers on Item 22 were different in type, color, microscopic characteristics and/or visible spectra (MSP) to the known fibers in Item 27A, and therefore, can be eliminated as having a common source (Elimination). All of the fibers on Item 24 were different in type, color, microscopic characteristics and/or visible spectra (MSP) to the known fibers in Items 26A, 26B and 27A and therefore, can be eliminated as having a common source (Elimination). One small blue cotton fiber was found on Item 24B-1 that was similar in type, color and visible spectra (MSP) to the Item 27B known fibers. Therefore, Item 27B cannot be eliminated as being the source of this unknown fiber (Type 4 Association). All other fibers on Item 24 were different in type, color, microscopic characteristics and/or visible spectra (MSP) to the known fibers in Item 27B and therefore, can be eliminated as having a common source (Elimination). It should be noted that blue cotton fibers are commonly encountered in the environment and may have limited forensic significance. Every type of conclusion may not be applicable in every case or for every material type. Type 1 Association: Identification An association in which items share individual characteristics and/or physically fit together that demonstrate the items were once from the same source. Type 2 Association: Highly likely An association in which items correspond in all measured physical properties, chemical composition and/or microscopic characteristics and share distinctive characteristic(s) that would not be expected to be found in the population of this evidence type. The distinctive characteristics were not sufficient for a Type 1 Association. Type 3 Association: Could have An association in which items correspond in all measured physical properties, chemical composition and/or microscopic characteristics and could have originated from the same source. Because it is possible for another sample to be indistinguishable from the submitted evidence, an individual source cannot be determined. Type 4 Association: Cannot eliminate An association in which items correspond in some but possibly not all measured physical properties, chemical composition and/or microscopic characteristics and cannot be eliminated as coming from the same source. This type of evidence may be commonly encountered in the environment, may have limited comparative value and/or there may be factor(s) limiting the comparison. Inconclusive: No conclusion could be reached regarding an association between the items. Elimination: Items exhibit dissimilarities in one or more of the following: physical properties, chemical composition or microscopic characteristics and, therefore, conclusively did not originate from the same source. Non-Association: Items exhibit dissimilarities but certain details or features are not sufficient for an Elimination. I hereby certify that the above report is true and accurate and represents my opinions and interpretations. Susan T. The fibers from the known clothing in Items 12A, 12B and 12C were different in color and/or type to the unknown blue cotton fiber in Item 24B-1 and therefore can be eliminated as being a possible source of this fiber (ELIMINATION). The Item 12E jeans contained 6 denim patches. Fibers from all of these patches as well as the jeans were compared to the unknown blue cotton fiber in Item 24B-1. The fibers from the jeans and five of the patches were different in color, type and/or visible spectra (MSP) to the unknown fiber in Item 24B1 and therefore can be eliminated as being a possible source of this fiber (ELIMINATION). One patch contained an assortment of blue cotton fibers among other fibers. Most of these fibers were different than the unknown fiber however one fiber was inconclusive in visible spectra (MSP). Due to the variability within the known sample and the inconclusive MSP results, no conclusion could be reached regarding an association or elimination between the Item 12E jean patch and the unknown blue cotton fiber in Item 24B-1 (INCONCLUSIVE). Items 12D, 12F and 12G were not analyzed. No other comparisons were completed on the unknown fibers removed from the Item 22 and Item 24 fingernail clippings from Jamar Oneal Clark to his own clothing in Item 12. The only bloodstain not located on the side opposite of the keyholes was a spatter stain located on a recessing portion of one hinge, o A number of indeterminate type bloodstains, where a particular bloodstain pattern analysis (BPA) classification could not be determined, were also located on the non-keyhole side of the handcuffs as well. • No bloodstains were observed on any other surfaces of the handcuffs. Item 12A - Black hooded vest • Transfer stains and indeterminate type bloodstains were visually observed on various areas of the outside of the body portion and throughout the interior of this piece of clothing. • An approximately 0.2 cm diameter bloodstain mixed with apparent tissue and/or fluid was present on the inside back of the vest. Item 12B - Black hooded sweatshirt • Bloodstains were observed on various areas of both the inside and outside of the black hooded sweatshirt that were determined to be of indeterminate type. • Apparent tissue and/or fluid mixed with blood was present on the inside back of the sweatshirt. • Complete BPA exams were not performed on the inside of this item. Item 12C - Red t-shirt • The majority of bloodstains on the t-shirt were located on the front and shoulders that included spatter stains, transfer stains and indeterminate type stains. o Approximately 20 spatter stains ranging in size from less than 1 mm up to 4 mm in diameter were located on the right shoulder, o On the stomach area of the t-shirt was a mixture of transfer stains and ^determinate type bloodstains. o Located on the left shoulder were mixtures of transfer stains and indeterminate type stains on the exterior surface and transfer stains, spatter stains, and indeterminate type stains on the interior of the t-shirt. • The only bloodstains observed on the back of the t-shirt were two areas of transfer stains and one area of ^determinate type. Item 12E - Jeans • The front of the jeans contained a mixture of predominately transfer stains and spatter stains. o Transfer stains were observed on the pocket, thigh, knee and shin areas of the right leg and the thigh and knee areas of the left leg. o The spatter stains all less than 1 mm in diameter were located on the thigh and knee areas of the left leg (28 stains) and the thigh, knee and shin areas of the right leg (9 stains), o Two indeterminate type bloodstain were located on the front of the jeans, one on each leg. • Two areas of transfer stains were the only bloodstains observed on the back of the jeans. Page 2 of 5 Laboratory No. S15-14003 Report No. 16 Item 12G1 - Left shoe • Approximately 55 spatter stains the majority of which were less than 1 mm with the largest being 1.5x4 mm in size were located on the right side of the ankle, tongue, laces, lace strap, and top front of the shoe. o A number of these spatter stains either had directionalities or placements on the shoe that supported their angles of impact as coming from above the shoe. • Two areas of indeterminate type bloodstains were located on the right side of this shoe. • No bloodstains were observed on the back or bottom sides of the left shoe. Item 12G2 - Right shoe • A total of 7 spatter stains with the largest being 0.8 x 1.5 mm in size were observed on the front top and left sides as well as on the laces of the right shoe. o One of these stains had an angle of impact that was supported as coming from above the shoe. • No bloodstains were observed on the right, back and bottom sides of the right shoe. Item 25 - Minneapolis P.D. CST Video and Photos - 1611 Plymouth Ave N. It should be noted that Bloodstain Pattern Analysis (BPA) interpretations from photographs are often limited compared to working with the actual crime scene and/or evidence. • The handcuffs were observed on the boulevard, bloodstained side up, and surrounded by a number of other objects including apparent Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) items containing bloodstains. • Located partially covering the handcuffs were a leaf and an Avant Gauze sponge wrapper with spatter stains (10's, less than or equal to 1 mm in size). • Blood pools and other indeterminate type bloodstains were located on the ground between the handcuffs and the sidewalk. • Transfer, saturation and additional indeterminate type bloodstains were located on gauze near the sidewalk. • Observed between the densest area of bloodstaining on the ground and the handcuffs was a plastic bag containing a number of bloodstains of indeterminate type primarily located on the side of the bag facing in the general direction of the blood pools on the ground. Conclusions: 1. The handcuffs were in proximity to a spatter producing event or events, one of which involved Jamar Oneal Clark's blood (Item 11-4, Report #15) that was Umited to one side of the handcuffs. Possible mechanisms producing the spatter include impact (including backspatter), expiration, cast-off, and satellite stains from dripped, projected or splashed blood. 2. The t-shirt, jeans, and both shoes were in proximity to a spatter producing event or events which involved the blood of an unidentified individual, indicated to be female (Items 12C-3, 12E-2, 12G1-1, and 12G2-1; Report #15). The source(s) of this unidentified individual's blood was located generally in front of and to the top of the shoes of Jamar Oneal Clark's clothing when this event(s) took place. Possible mechanisms producing the spatter include but are not limited to impact, expiration, cast-off and satellite stains from dripped, projected or splashed blood. 3. The presence of a transfer stain containing the blood of the same unidentified individual as mentioned above (Item 12E-3, report #15) is consistent with an object containing their blood coming in contact with the jeans. Page 3 of 5 Laboratory No. S15-14003 Report some No. 16 4. The presence of bloodstains throughout both the black hooded vest and black hooded sweatshirt, of which had apparent tissue and/or fluid, is consistent with these items being on or located near to Jamar Oneal Clark while he was bleeding. However because the majority of the bloodstains on both of these items were either indeterminate or not readily visual (detected by chemical means only) the BPA interpretations and conclusions were limited. 5. The presence of medical equipment with bloodstains demonstrated that medical intervention could be responsible for some of the bloodstains observed on the handcuffs and Jamar Oneal Clark's clothing. SWGSTAIN Terminology: Angle of Impact - The acute angle (alpha), relative to the plane of a target, at which a blood drop strikes the target. Backspatter Pattern - A bloodstain pattern resulting from blood drops that traveled in the opposite direction of the external force applied; associated with an entrance wound created by a projectile. Bloodstain - A deposit of blood on a surface. Cast-off Pattern - A bloodstain pattern resulting from blood drops released from an object due to its motion. Cessation Cast-off Pattern - A bloodstain pattern resulting from blood drops released from an object due to its rapid deceleration. Directionality - The characteristic of a bloodstain that indicates the direction blood was moving at the time of deposition. Drip Pattern - A bloodstain pattern resulting from a liquid that dripped into another liquid, at least one of which was blood. Expiration Pattern - A bloodstain pattern resulting from blood forced by airflow out of the nose, mouth, or a wound. Impact Pattern - A bloodstain pattern resulting from an object striking liquid blood. Parent Stain - A bloodstain from which a satellite stain originated. Pool - A bloodstain resulting from an accumulation of liquid blood on a surface. Projected Pattern - A bloodstain pattern resulting from the ejection of a volume of blood under pressure. Satellite Stain - A smaller bloodstain that originated during the formation of the parent stain as a result of blood impacting a surface. Spatter Stain - A bloodstain resulting from a blood drop dispersed through the air due to an external force applied to a source of liquid blood. Splash Pattern - A bloodstain pattern resulting from a volume of liquid blood that falls or spills onto a surface. Target - A surface onto which blood has been deposited. Transfer Stain - A bloodstain resulting from contact between a blood-bearing surface and another surface. Results of Laboratory Examination: The following observations and conclusions are based upon the information provided to date. If more information becomes available, I reserve the right to amend this report. Reported bloodstains were either presumptively tested for the presence of blood (Report No. 19, dated 02/26/2016) or were visually consistent with blood. Orientations such as 'left' or 'right'for clothing descriptions are in reference to the clothes being worn. Observations: Item 27A-Shirt • The majority of bloodstains on the shirt were transfer stains. These were located on the front right chest pocket and arnipit, front upper right arm, back lower left, and back lower left arm. o One of the transfer stains on the upper right arm was mixed with apparent tissue. • One indeterminate type bloodstain, where a specific bloodstain pattern analysis classification could not be determined, was located on the outside of the front right chest pocket flap. Page 1 of 2 Laboratory No. S15-14003 Report No. 21 Item 27B - Pants • Transfer stains mixed with apparent tissue were the only bloodstains observed on the pants. Three areas in total were located on the outside of the right leg thigh pocket flap. Conclusions: 1. The presence of transfer stains on the shirt and pants is consistent with object(s) containing the blood of Jamar Oneal Clark and Rayann Francine Hayes coming in contact with these items. SWGSTAIN Terminology: Bloodstain: A deposit of blood on a surface. Bloodstain pattern: A grouping or distribution of bloodstains that indicates through regular or repetitive form, order, or arrangement the manner in which the pattern was deposited. Transfer Stain: A bloodstain resulting from contact between a blood-bearing surface and another surface. I hereby certify that the above report is true and accurate and represents my opinions and interpretations. Jason A.
