RESOLUTION WHEREAS, in 1869, the Cincinnati Red Stockings, complete with their knickerbockers and bright red hosiery, became baseball’s first professional team. Ending their first season with a perfect record, the Red Stockings traveled from coast to coast, inspiring fans of all ages and helping spark interest in a sport that would soon become America’s favorite pastime; and WHEREAS, as America’s passion for the game grew, so did the notoriety of the Queen City, which quickly became known for its enthusiasm for baseball. Throughout the following decades, players came and went, team names were changed, and new venues would be built; but one thing remained the same – Cincinnati’s undeniable affection for baseball; and WHEREAS, the Cincinnati Reds have been one of the most distinguished baseball teams of all time, winning five World Series titles and producing baseball legends such as Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan, Tony Pérez, Pete Rose, Ken Griffey, Sr., Barry Larkin and Sparky Anderson; and WHEREAS, Opening Day has become known as an unofficial holiday in Cincinnati - a day which coincidently coincides with an unusual increase in sick days for children and adults alike; and WHEREAS, Cincinnati kicks off the 2016 Cincinnati Reds season with the 97th Findlay Market Cincinnati Reds Opening Day Parade – a favorite tradition of generations of Cincinnati Reds fans throughout the Queen City. NOW, THEREFORE, We, John R. Kasich and Mary Taylor, Governor and Lieutenant Governor of the State of Ohio, do hereby recognize April 4, 2016 as CINCINNATI REDS OPENING DAY and we extend our best wishes to the players, coaches and fans from around the world for a successful season.
