The "U," founded in 1850, has for many years been involved in education and research related to the energy and mineral resources of Utah. Various companies operate research programs in partnership with the university in Research Park, adjacent to the campus. The technical tour will examine these gems of technological development, which exist in the urban setting of a major university surrounded by the Wasatch Mountains and the West Desert of Utah. University and partnership affiliate representatives will present current activities involving oil and gas reservoir characterization, drilling research, geothermal energy development and wetlands protection for developed public lands. Those who attend will discover the abundant variety of energy and earth sciences research conducted in Salt Lake City and learn of the geologic richness of the region for higher education and technology transfer. Tour participants will meet in the Hilton lobby at 8:45 a.m. and return at approximately 1 p.m. Comfortable shoes and casual clothing are suggested. Later that evening, the Kansas delegation will host a special Annual Meeting welcome reception honoring IOGCC 1999 Chairman-Elect Gov. Bill Graves of Kansas. The reception will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the beautiful Three Seasons room of the Salt Lake City Hilton. Appropriate dress is business casual. Monday brings a special guided tour for registered spouses and guests, the "Family History Library" and "Crossroads of the West" city tour. Tour participants will meet in the Hilton lobby at 9:15 a.m. on Dec. 7 and return at 4:30 p.m. The tour begins with one of the fastest growing pastimes in the U.S., genealogy research. Participants can enjoy a three-hour journey of self-discovery in the world's largest storehouse of family records, the Family Library, with the assistance of a professional genealogical researcher. Note: We suggest you seek out family names of interest prior to arriving in Salt Lake City. Next, the tour moves to the Lion House (a home of Brigham Young) for lunch, then on to the historic Salt Lake City downtown area and the world-famous Mormon Temple, more than 40 years and $4 million in the making. A visit to the Utah State Capitol and surrounding residential "Avenues," then the University of Utah, will follow. The tour also includes Fort Douglas, founded by Abraham Lincoln in 1862, and This is the Place State Park (the landmark where Brigham Young once announced, "This is the right place . . ."). The tour moves to Trolley Square, where antique trolley barns have been converted through an award-winning restoration into unique shops, boutiques and restaurants. Comfortable shoes and casual dress are suggested. Monday evening, meeting participants and registered spouses/guests will share an evening of fun during the host reception, beginning at 6:30 p.m. This reception is sponsored by the Utah Host Committee and will take place in the Market West room of the Salt Lake City Hilton. Appropriate dress is business casual. [up] TRAINING SEMINARS There will be two training opportunities associated with this year's Annual Meeting.
