Regarding    the  recommendation  of  the  ad  hoc  task  for  14  years  ago  and the  hiring  of  Gene  Taylor  as  deputy  director  of  athletics… The  acceptance  of  the  recommendations  of  the  ad  hoc  task  force  by  the  president  of  the  UI  in   September  2000  included  approval  of  a  recommended  administrative  structure  for  the  UI’s   Department  of  Intercollegiate  Athletics.    It  did  not  create  a  policy  requiring  that  structure.     Furthermore,  an  employment  policy  which  mandates  gender-‐specific  appointments  would  raise   serious  legal  issues  under  applicable  employment  laws. The  hiring  of  a  deputy  director  of  athletics    last  summer  by  Gary  Barta  as  part  of  a  significant   reorganization  of  the  department’s  senior  staff  did  not  eliminate  or  diminish  the  importance  of   the  UI’s  senior  women’s  (athletics)  administrator  (SWA),  a  position  which  is  currently  filled  by   Paula  Jantz,  a  long-‐time  member  of  the  UI  Athletics  Department  staff  who  was  originally  hired   by  Dr.  Christine  Grant,  the  UI’s  retired  director  of  women’s  athletics. Specific  to  the  hiring  of  Gene  Taylor,  the  search  was  an  open  search  driven  –  because  of  the   direct  and  significant  impact  it  would  have  on  all  24  of  our  sports  programs  –  not  by  the  desire   to  hire  a  female  or  a  male,  but  to  hire  the  absolute  very  best,  most  qualified  person  available,   female  or  male.
