Gurnard Pre-School Baring Road, Cowes, Isle of Wight, PO31 8DS Inspection date Previous inspection date 18 March 2016 10 May 2012 This inspection: Good 2 Previous inspection: Good 2 Effectiveness of the leadership and management Good 2 Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Good 2 Personal development, behaviour and welfare Outstanding 1 Outcomes for children Good 2 The quality and standards of the early years provision Summary of key findings for parents This provision is good  The manager completes regular monitoring of children's achievements to track their progress and to identify and address any gaps in their learning. Staff make good use of additional funding to obtain resources that help to support children's school readiness.  Children have excellent relationships with staff. They are very happy, settle easily and are keen and eager to explore the range of activities and exciting experiences on offer.  Children who have special educational needs receive good support. Staff use specific advice from other professionals and vary their teaching methods for each individual child. This helps children to catch up and make good progress.  There are effective partnerships with schools and other early years professionals. For example, staff work closely with them to help prepare children for their move to school.  Parents speak highly of the pre-school and how well staff know their children.  Children have many opportunities to develop an understanding of the world around them and the differences between themselves and others. They learn to consider each other's feelings, ideas and opinions. It is not yet outstanding because:  Staff do not always consider what each child can do when planning activities to enable all children to get the most out of them.  Staff do not fully encourage all parents to share information about what their children do at home, to contribute towards the ongoing assessments. Inspection report: Gurnard Pre-School, 18 March 2016 2 of 5 What the setting needs to do to improve further To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:  strengthen the planning of some activities for groups of children to ensure that they are all fully involved to help extend their learning  develop partnerships with parents further to encourage them all to contribute to the assessments of their children's learning and progress. Inspection activities  The inspector observed staff interactions with the children and the quality of teaching during a range of activities.  The inspector spoke to parents, children and staff.  The inspector completed a joint observation with the manager.  The inspector sampled a range of documentation including children's records, policies and procedures and evidence of the suitability of staff. Inspector Jayne Godden Inspection report: Gurnard Pre-School, 18 March 2016 3 of 5 Inspection findings Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good Safeguarding is effective. The manager and staff have a good understanding of their responsibility to keep children safe. They are confident in the procedures to follow should they have concerns about a child's welfare. The manager monitors the quality of the provision effectively, taking account of the views of parents and children to drive improvement. Staff have positive opportunities to discuss their practice and professional development with the manager. They regularly attend training courses and share their learning with the staff team to improve children's learning experiences. Effective procedures help staff to assess children's knowledge and skills before they start to plan positive learning experiences from the beginning and review the progress they make. Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good Staff have a secure understanding of how children learn. They create an exciting and stimulating environment for them. Staff develop children's communication skills well, for example, they engage them in positive conversations and model the good use of language. Children develop effective early writing skills. For instance, they used their hands and fingers to make marks in shaving foam and recorded the toy animals they found 'hiding' in the trees. Staff encourage children's mathematical understanding, such as when they recognise numbers, shapes and colours in the environment. Staff interact very well with children as they play. They extend children's skills and knowledge successfully in all areas of their learning, through activities that interest them. Personal development, behaviour and welfare are outstanding Children develop exceptionally high levels of confidence and concentrate well. Staff very consistently acknowledge and praise children's efforts and achievements. For example, they use a 'wow tree' to value children's achievements. Children have abundant opportunities for fresh air and exercise to develop healthy bodies; they benefit from the extremely well-resourced outdoor play environments. Children's behaviour is exemplary. Children work extremely well together to achieve tasks. For example, they cooperated with each other extremely well to work out how to untangle ropes on the outdoor pulley system to make them work again. Children spontaneously take turns while they play and listen very carefully to each other when they engage in conversations. Outcomes for children are good All children make good progress. They are extremely independent and manage most tasks by themselves. For example, they show good physical skills as they climb the 'pirate ship' and work together to use the pulleys in the trees. Children use technology resources well to extend their own learning. For example, they find out about giraffes and their natural habitat. All children are keen learners and develop a good range of skills ready for their next stage in their learning or school.
