Seaside High Art and Music Students ­ June 2015 
Survey participants 
In order to 
discover and quantify 
some of the needs of 
Seaside’s adolescent 
population, we 
conducted a 5 question 
multiple­choice survey, 
and distributed it to 144 
students at Seaside High School. We also included some sections of the survey as 
free­response, so that we could get some direct input from our high school respondents. The 
responses varied quite a bit, but for the 
most part, wavered around a few common 
answers. 
When we asked the students about 
disciplines of art that they already took part 
in, we found that an overwhelming majority 
of them already participate in music of 
some sorts, with a total of 117 respondents 

 (almost twice as much as all of the other respondents combined). The second most common 
response was painting, with a total of 58 respondents that participate in this art discipline 
(Exhibit E). However, we found that not all of the students were active participants in the arts, 
and when queried, we found that the most common reason for not doing art or music was a lack 
of time, with a total of 39.5% of respondents stating it. The second most common reason was 
that there is a lack of opportunity to participate in art and/or music in Seaside (Exhibit G).  
Do you think that a Multicultural Arts Center is a good idea for the city of Seaside? 
Overall, when 
questioned about their 
general opinion of a 
center for arts in 
Seaside that would be 
available to high school 
students, it was almost 
unanimous that it would 
be beneficial and 
desired (98% said yes)(Exhibit F). More specifically, when asked realistically about the 
frequency with which they would visit a center for the arts in Seaside, 42.2% of respondents 
stated that they would use it often, with 35.7% stating that they would use it on occasion. 
However, 15.6% of respondents stated that they would make use of an arts center in Seaside 
every day (Exhibit H). 

 

How often would you use an arts center? 
Based on our survey, a center for the arts in Seaside is something which is not only 
needed in order to further develop our youth’s artistic talents, but is also something which many 

 students would openly embrace. Opening a multicultural arts center in a town full of young 
individuals seeking outlets to express their creativity would be extremely beneficial to the 
community. The survey helped us find 
quantifiable data to support our belief 
that a large number of young people in 
the Seaside area would make use of a 
center for the arts.  
We then narrowed down more 
specifically to some elements of our 
idea, the Seaside Arts Center, and had 
the respondents rate them based on importance. We found that general music classes are the 
overall most important by ranking (on a 0­5 ranking scale), with a mean rank of 4.43 out of 5. 
The next most important elements are art classes with a score of 4.1, concerts with a score of 
4.09, and social gathering place/café with a ranking of 4.02 out of 5 (Exhibit A).

 

  In the free response sections that were embedded into the previous question, we 
attempted to find some of the specific types of art, music, and dance classes that our target 
population of high schoolers takes interest in. The type of art class that was most requested by 
students was painting, which made up 34.6% of the total votes. The next most desired type of 
class was “all media”, which made up 25.6% of the total votes, and the least requested classes 
were ceramics, digital art, and sculpture (Exhibit B). With respect to the performing arts, we 
found that the most important style of dance classes to students is Hip Hop, with 34.6% of the 
total requests, and next is “all styles”, with 28.6% of the total (Exhibit C). The most requested 
genre of music that students suggested to have classes in is “all genres” with 34.4%, followed 
by jazz, with 31.3% of the total requests. The last third of requests was made up of other genres 
such as Mariachi, Rock, and Classical, as well as a few others (Exhibit D).  

 
 
 
 
 

 FINDINGS
 
Importance of Arts Center Elements

● The type of art class that was most requested by students was painting, which made up

● Resoundingly, yes was the most common belief, almost unanimous (98% said yes).
