Transactions in the retail industries fell 0.3 percent. Transactions in the core retail industries fell 0.1 percent. Values are only available at the national level, and are not adjusted for price changes. The value of electronic card spending in the retail industries was down 0.3 percent in May 2016, following a 0.8 percent rise in April 2016. Three of the six retail industries had decreases and three had increases in May 2016. The biggest decrease was from the fuel industry, down $8.9 million (1.5 percent). The biggest increase was from the consumables industry, up $7.3 million (0.4 percent). The total value of electronic card spending, including the two non-retail industries (services, and other non-retail), was down 0.6 percent in May. This follows a rise of 1.3 percent in April 2016. The non-retailing industries (excluding services) were the main driver of the decrease in the total electronic card spending for May 2016. There was a decrease of $21 million (1.5 percent) in spending compared with April 2016. Core retail spending (which excludes the vehicle-related industries) fell 0.1 percent in May 2016, after a 0.3 percent rise in April. 2 Trends for the total, retail, and core retail series have generally been rising since these series began in October 2002. In actual terms, card-holders made 130 million transactions across all industries in May 2016, with an average value of $49. The total amount spent across all transactions was $6.4 billion. Imputation of missing data As outlined in Electronic Card Transactions: January 2016, Statistics NZ has imputed for some missing data for the durables industry.
