Editorial:   Fireworks   Keep   the   Spirit   of   Liberty   Alive 
  

240   years   ago,   men   from   all   walks   of   life   came   together   in   search   of   freedom.   They   won   a 
hard­fought   war   not   with   mightier   forces   or   superior   weapons,   but   with   the   spirit   of   liberty   —  a 
spirit   that   is   not   easily   broken. 
 
In   a  letter   to   his   wife   on   July   3,   1776,   John   Adams   wrote   that   America’s   independence   would   be 
“celebrated,   by   succeeding   Generations,   as   the   great   anniversary   Festival”   and   “ought   to   be 
commemorated   with   Pomp   and   Parade...   Bonfires   and   Illuminations   from   one   End   of   this   Continent 
to   the   other.” 
 
Adams   was   onto   something.   The   spirit   of   liberty   that   drove   America’s   colonists   and   our   Founding 
Fathers   still   lives   within   all   of   us.   Though   it   may   seem   weak   at   times   —  like   you,   I’m   deeply 
concerned   about   our   nation,   especially   during   this   divisive   election   cycle   —  there’s   something 
about   the   magnificent   fireworks   we   watch   every   Independence   Day   that   rekindles   that   spirit   in   our 
hearts. 
 
The   fireworks   industry   generates   over   $1   billion   in   sales   annually.   Texas   recently   repealed   its 
fireworks   tax,   making   fireworks   more   accessible   for   all   Texans,   from   families   celebrating   in 

 neighborhood   streets   to   community­wide   events.   Many   of   these   events   support   charities,   providing 
tangible   benefit   to   our   state. 
 
And   despite   criticism   leveled   at   the   fireworks   industry   through   cherry­picked   horror   stories   about 
flagrant   misuse,   accidents   are   rare.   The   most   recent   data   available   shows   only   2  injuries   caused   in 
Texas   in   2014.  
 
Safe   and   responsible   fireworks   use   yields   an   invaluable,   unquantifiable   benefit:   bringing 
communities   together   and   reminding   us   that,   despite   our   differences,   we   share   the   same   heritage 
and   values.  
 
That’s   why   it’s   more   important   now   than   ever   to   celebrate   all   that   Independence   Day   signifies.  
 
July   4th   fireworks   are   a  reflection   of   patriotism   —  that   is,   love   for   our   country.   Though   we   may   be 
troubled   about   the   actions   of   our   government   and   its   leaders,   we   still   love   our   nation   and   the   values 
it   stands   for:   liberty   and   justice   for   all.   And   we   can   re­commit   ourselves   to   fighting   for   those 
values. 
 
In   that   spirit   of   liberty,   I  invite   you   and   your   family   to   attend   a  free   professional   fireworks   show   at
