From: Sent: To: Cc: Subject: 12 February 2016 15:50 Re: FW: Tay beavers Sorry no particular location. The farmers were mostly from the area of Angus from Dundee to Forfar, but I wouldn't be surprised if this is going on all over the Tay catchment. Farmers, like gamekeepers, have a great network, and it seems logical that if they think the beavers are a threat they will get rid of them while they have little or no protection and they are unlikely to be prosecuted for anything. I suspect they will be just shooting them in the water, which might result in injuries rather than death much of the time. Like seals that are shot in the water no doubt they will just float off downstream or die in their lodge. If I do happen to hear anything else I'll let you know. The farmers at the meeting seemed to accept my view that there were a lot of benefits from having small and leaky beaver dams on burns and the headwaters of rivers, which will slow down water in times of a flood. I suspect from naive comments made that some of them thought they built great big dams across mature rivers! Kind regards ----Original message---From: Date: 12/02/2016 - 13:42 (GMTST) To : Subject: FW: Tay beavers Hi Depressing, but not too surprising. Is there any more info on how and where? Of course it is not lawful to be in possession of a beaver carcase without a licence from SNH and so I presume they are just leaving them where they fall - or more likely shooting them in the water or pushing them into the water. We should in that case start to see a few turning up. Any further info would be very helpful - I can give you a call if you prefer. For info it was clear from discussion that farmers and gamekeepers are shooting as many beavers as possible just now before they become protected.
