Early Intervention Is Critical For Struggling Readers Remember: When we started the year the average student at EDES was 1-2 grade-levels behind in math and reading on nationally normed assessments, falling in the lowest third of students nation-wide. Early Intervention Planning EDES • Increased instructional minutes in reading/writing (ELA) for all students • Built in intervention block – in addition to ELA block • Provide Tier 2 and Tier 3 interventions to qualifying students with progress monitoring • Use of a guaranteed and viable curriculum, along with research-based strategies and materials • Instructional focus plans to re-teach and re-assess mastery • Differentiated and targeted small group instruction Early Intervention Planning EDES • Data driven instruction • NWEA – Provides instructional level skills students are ready to learn and aides in small group creation • CMA – Provides data based on grade level standards • Additional support provided by building-based Curriculum Resource Teachers and a local Curriculum Specialist • Use of research-based instructional software programs • Extended School day allows for targeted interventions and tutoring for all students • After-school tutoring available for students in grades 3-6 Improving and Tracking Literacy with Reading Plus and Fountas Pinnell?s Running Records • Reading Plus is a research-based silent reading intervention that helps students gain proficiency by improving comprehension, reading rate, and vocabulary. • There is a clear correlation that those students who frequently use RP will achieve a higher percentile ranking and vise versa.
