On exam, the wound is contracting very nicely and is covered by scab material. When the sab material is removed, there is a thin layer of thick purulent material covering the tissue. it is only superficial and does not extend into the tissues. The underlying tissue is healthy and bleeds readily indicating normal blood supply. instructed keepers to clean the wound daily with water and chlorhexidine solution. Plan to start a shert course of antibiotics to help clear the superficial infection in conjunction with the topical treatment. Addendum: Routine annual bloodwork performed. CBC and chemistry results are normal. Samples also submitted for routine vitamin analysis and DPP. Tuberculosis DPP testing was negative. Bamboo is alert and active and eating well today. The tail tip is scabbed ever and healing well. instructed keepers to apply SSD today to finish the prescription then just continue to keep the area ciean daily with water and saline. Left front foot is also looking good. The nail crack is growing out and the new nail growth looks normal. The small area of swelling over the medial aspect ofthe cuticle remains the same but there is no associated heat or sign of inflammation. Keepers will continue to keep the nail trimmed to prevent the crack from prograssing into the new nail growth. Instructed them to apply pressure to wound to stop bleeding. By the time I arrived the bleeding had stopped and only a bruise was seen. Animal was released and it walked around for 5 minutes, then the tail was rechecked and no reopening of the wound was seen. Likely this animal broke open a blood vessel on the wound site through normal swinging of the tail. Instructed keepers to monitor and if bleeding occurs again, to apply pressure again and contact veterinarian. Keepers estimate this animal lost between 50-150ml of blood. This is insigni?cant volume for this size animal. Exam: On exam Bamboo is bright, alert and actively eating from the hay feeder. There is an open wound at the tail tip that is clean with no active bleeding. There is some soft tissue and tendon exposed but no bone is exposed. Keepers did not see what happened but it is most likely a bite wound from one of the other animals in the group. Keepers cleaned the wound with saline prior to my arrival for examination. Plan: Plan to clean the wound daily and apply SSD ointment to expedite healing. It should heal without incident.
