Accommodation Survey: July 2016 Embargoed until 10:45am – 12 September 2016 Key facts For July 2016, compared with July 2015:      National guest nights were up 6.9 percent. Domestic guest nights were up 2.0 percent, and international guest nights were up 15.8 percent. North Island guest nights were up 7.4 percent, and South Island guest nights were up 6.0 percent. Eleven of the 12 regional areas had more guest nights. All four accommodation types had more guest nights. For the year ended July 2016, national guest nights were up 6.0 percent from the year ended July 2015. Trend and seasonally adjusted movements may be amended when we add future months to the series. National guest nights up 6.9 percent National guest nights spent in short-term commercial accommodation were up 6.9 percent in July 2016, compared with July 2015. Guest nights in July 2016 are the highest for any July month, with record levels recorded for both main islands, domestic and international guest nights, and all four accommodation types. For the year ended July 2016, national guest nights were up 6.0 percent from the July 2015 year. Seasonally adjusted guest nights fell 2.2 percent in July 2016, compared with June 2016. This followed an 8.8 percent rise in June. The trend for national guest nights continued to rise. 2 Guest nights up in most regions Guest nights were up in 11 of the 12 regional areas in July 2016 compared with July 2015. Seasonally adjusted North Island guest nights fell 2.0 percent in July 2016, compared with June 2016. Seasonally adjusted South Island guest nights fell 1.9 percent. Latest guest night trends show a continuing rise for the North Island and little movement for the South Island. 3 Domestic and international guest nights up Domestic guest nights were up 2.0 percent in July 2016, compared with July 2015. International guest nights were up 15.8 percent. International visitor arrivals (short-term) were up 14 percent. Seasonally adjusted domestic guest nights fell 3.5 percent in July 2016, compared with June 2016. Seasonally adjusted international guest nights rose 0.4 percent. Latest guest night trends show a continuing rise for domestic and international guest nights. 4 Guest nights up for all accommodation types Guest nights were up for all four accommodation types in July 2016, compared with July 2015:     hotel guest nights up 7.8 percent motel guest nights up 4.7 percent backpacker guest nights up 3.7 percent holiday park guest nights up 13.5 percent. Domestic guest nights were up for two of the four accommodation types in July 2016, compared with July 2015:     hotels up 3.8 percent motels down 2.5 percent backpackers down 1.8 percent holiday parks up 12.8 percent. International guest nights were up for all four accommodation types in July 2016, compared with July 2015:     hotels up 14.5 percent motels up 32.5 percent backpackers up 5.7 percent holiday parks up 15.4 percent. The following graphs show that for hotels, motels, and holiday parks, domestic guests are usually the main contributor to total guest nights. Capacity was down for three of the four accommodation types:     hotels down 1.6 percent motels down 1.0 percent backpackers up 1.3 percent holiday parks down 0.9 percent. Occupancy rates up The occupancy rate was up for all four accommodation types in July 2016, compared with July 2015:     hotels up 3.8 percentage points motels up 2.0 percentage points backpackers up 0.9 percentage point holiday parks up 1.5 percentage points.
