1 Justice declines drug test kit demonstration By Alan Tobin Review-Journal Justice of the Peace Kelly Slade said Wednesday it would be im- proper for him to attend a demon- stration this month of a narcotics field test kit that Las Vegas police hope will soon be used to help pros- ecute drug?suspects. Police, prosecutors and judges say hundreds of drug suspects are routinely released from custody each month because of the long time it takes to get results of police laboratory drug analyses to Justice Court for a defendant?s prelimi- nary hearing. The legal system gives the dis- trict attorney?s office eight days from the date of arrest to file for mal charges against a suspect. If the charges are not filed Within eight days, the suspect must be released. Metropolitan Police Department Of?cials contend that use of the fieldtest kit would enable 'of?cers .to getthe drug results to the judges within the eight-day limit. But be- fore the" kit' can be fused in drug case's, its?use must be found accept-' able by. the" juStices of. the peace.? Next month the Clark County district attorney?s office plans to presents series of test cases before each of. the justices involving the use of the-kit. Slade commended police for their plans to train officers in the use of the kit, but said'he will not attend the demonstration, which is scheduled fer Oct. 27.
