BREAKING NEWS June 24, 2016

 

Multipie Derns have told our reporter that Velasquez will drop out of her
re?election race in LD29 today, though she won't resign her seat. The
move allows her to retain her paycheck and bene?ts through the end of
the year; while attempting to assuage concerns among Dems that she
will be an albatross around the neck of the caucus in the upcoming
election. One Dem source said the caucus is looking at AR816-343
and wondering if they can replace her on the ballot. The statute states
that, in the event a candidate voluntarily withdraws from a race "after
the close of petition ?ling but prior to a primary or general election," the
district PCs "shall nominate a candidate of the party's choice and shall
file a nomination paper and af?davit." Although there are already three
other Democrats seeking the two seats, elections attorney Kory
Langhofer told our reporter that the law seems to indicate that
Democrats could choose a replacement for Velasquez on the ballot.
