June 14, 2012 List of Artifacts from Strawtown Koteewi Park Burials A comprehensive list of burials and associated, or potentially associated, artifacts are provided from Strawtown Koteewi Park archaeological sites. These include the Strawtown enclosure (12H883), Castor Farm (12H3), and 12H1052 sites. Artifact information was garnered from the IPFW-AS Strawtown database in a Microsoft Access format and from grant reports. Each section below contains a list of burials and artifacts. Any artifact that can be reasonably associated with a burial is noted. When a feature contained an interment, a reasonable presumption is that artifacts from the feature fill should be included if requested for repatriation. IPFW-AS willingly acknowledges the desires by the Oklahoma Miami for repatriation of human remains and objects, and will concur and support their desires for return of any object or remains previously excavated. This list of items should not be considered conclusive, but is a starting point for consideration during the consultation process. Each burial is listed below with the field specimen number, the feature or burial number, and the associated catalog numbers. Items highlighted in red were artifacts that were definitely identified as associated funerary objects. 2001 Strawtown Enclosure (12H883), Accession Number 01.71, Report of Investigation 216 Six catalog numbers were identified and assigned to human remains elements or fragments. No intact interments were encountered during the 2001 excavation year. No associated artifacts are listed here and the list of human remains is provided in the attached document. 2002 Strawtown Enclosure (12H883), Accession Number 03.68, Report of Investigation 301 The database and the ROI 301 report have no record of human remains. However, this should be verified by checking the curated artifacts for any previously identified human remains. 2003 Castor Farm (12H3), Accession Number 03.50, Report of Investigation 401 A number of isolated human remains were encountered during the 2003 excavations at the Castor Farm site. Additionally, three separate burials were exposed during excavation. These consisted of Burial 1, a partially flexed individual; Burial 2, a partially flexed individual; and Burial 3, a large bundle burial with the remains of at least five individuals. The individual elements and fragments were recovered from feature and unit contexts. These items are presumed to have been secondarily deposited after they were prehistorically encountered during construction of houses, storage pits, postholes, etc. A list of these items is provided in the attached document. 1   Burial 1 was located in Units G and K and interred within an obvious excavated burial pit. Feature 13 was located in close proximity, near the feet. The written description of Feature 13 indicates that it is likely associated with Burial 1 based on the presence of two abraders and two complete beamers. The contents of this feature could also be considered grave goods and may be requested for repatriation with the burial. Other possible associated artifacts are presented in the following table. The individual elements and fragments were recovered from feature and unit contexts. These items are presumed to have been secondarily deposited, or discarded, after they were prehistorically encountered during construction of houses, storage pits, postholes, etc. A list of these items is provided in the attached document. Additionally, two interments were encountered during excavation, one each in Features 46 and 48. One interment was encountered in Feature 46 in the central portion of the plaza. An associated funerary object, a shell-tempered Taylor Village-style vessel was removed, studied, and then replaced in the burial. It is presumed that all artifacts encountered in the excavation unit, excluding historic items, were associated with the burial and should be considered for repatriation. These items are listed in the table below. Feature 48 was identified in the south profile wall of the main excavation block. It was a bundle burial containing long bones and a cranium. Upon discovery, no further work was completed and no effort to further expose the individual was undertaken. A list of artifacts from this feature is included in the table below. No associated artifacts are listed here and the list of human remains is provided in the attached document. 2009 Castor Farm (12H3), Accession Number 09.2, Report of Investigation 1001 Three isolated human remains were encountered during the 2009 excavations at the Castor Farm site. The individual elements and fragments were recovered from feature and unit contexts. These items are presumed to have been secondarily deposited after they were prehistorically encountered during construction of houses, storage pits, postholes, etc. A list of items is provided in the attached document. Additionally, two burials were partially exposed during excavation and one feature contained disassociated human elements. Feature 81/Posthole 86 contained an infant skull; Feature 80 had three separate human elements and few artifacts; and Feature 68 was partially exposed in Unit U until human elements were identified amongst the feature debris, at which point excavation was halted and all bone placed back within the feature. The individual elements and fragments were recovered from feature and unit contexts. These items are presumed to have been secondarily deposited, or discarded, after they were prehistorically encountered during construction of houses, storage pits, postholes, etc. A list of these items is provided in the attached document. Additionally, three interments were encountered during excavation, one each in Features 67, 72, and 74. One interment was encountered in Feature 67 near the base of a large, deep storage pit. The individual was apparently covered with peeled bark. A number of associated funerary objects were identified within close proximity to this individual. These were photo-documented and replaced. Concerning the artifacts, at least two differing interpretations may be offered regarding association. One is that all artifacts recovered from Feature 67 could be considered associated with the burial and should be repatriated. A secondary interpretation is that all artifacts located below the ‘Bark Layer’ are associated funerary objects and should be repatriated. These items are listed in the table below and should be discussed as part of consultation with the Miami of Oklahoma. A second and third interment was partially exposed in Features 72 and 74 during excavation. Upon discovery, no further work was completed and no effort to further expose the individuals was undertaken. A list of artifacts from these features is included in the tables below.
