UHS is one of the largest and most respected hospital management companies in the nation, and we are proud of the compassionate and high quality care we have provided to millions of patients. We were founded nearly four decades ago on simple principles: putting patients first, providing the highest quality care and building long-term relationships in the communities we serve. Those principles endure today and have guided us as we have grown into an industry leader. Our Business UHS was founded in 1979. Today, UHS subsidiaries own and/or operate 25 acute care hospitals, 229 behavioral health facilities, 3 free-standing emergency departments and 4 surgical hospitals and surgery and radiation oncology centers in 37 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and the United Kingdom. We are the largest system of freestanding behavioral health facilities in the United States. Our facilities employ more than 72,000 compassionate and dedicated individuals. We take great pride in our treatment philosophy of caring for the individuals and families we serve with respect and compassion. Our programs and services are life-changing and provide hope to those entrusted to our care. UHS facilities strive to provide the best possible health care and often exceed quality and patient care standards. For example, our Behavioral Health inpatient facilities consistently exceed national HospitalBased Inpatient Psychiatric Services score (HBIPS) averages for each specific indicator – in some cases by more than 25%. HBIPS are evidence-based measurements of processes and practices at inpatient psychiatric hospitals that positively affect the course of a patient’s hospitalization. Our facilities are compared to approximately 1600 other providers across the country. In 2015, UHS Behavioral Health facilities underwent 75 Joint Commission surveys with a 100% success rate for re-accreditation, and, to date, all of our facilities reviewed by the Joint Commission have been re-accredited. How We Operate As a corporate entity, UHS operates with a national and international scope, but the operations at each of our facilities and the provision of healthcare at those facilities is a local matter. Each facility operates independently and has its own management team with responsibility for the day-to-day operations of the facility. The corporate office serves as a resource for our facilities to assist them in their efforts to provide the best possible care and treatment to their patients. We have a tremendous responsibility to the communities we serve to provide compassionate, skilled care – a responsibility we take very seriously and transcends our bottom line. In fact, in 2015, UHS facilities in total provided more than $1 billion in uncompensated care – including charity care. Patient care and safety are our highest priorities. In 2015, UHS Behavioral Health facilities treated almost 450,000 patients amounting to more than 5.8 million patient days. The rate of serious incidents at UHS facilities was 0.0031%. Although verifiable data is not publicly available to compare our low incident rates to other providers, we believe based upon our experience in the industry that our rate of 1 serious incidents compares favorably to our competitors or other comparable behavioral health facilities serving similar populations. Many of our facilities are designated as Top Performers on Key Quality Measures year after year by The Joint Commission – the oldest, largest and most respected accrediting body in healthcare. We are committed to investing in capital improvements like facility upgrades, safety improvements and maintenance retrofits in order to be able to deliver the highest quality of care, enhance the patient experience and provide the safest environment for our patients. In 2015, UHS spent almost $400 million on capital expenditures at our facilities – and over $1.1 billion in the last three years. Like all healthcare providers, we have established compliance programs in place. As a part of that program, the UHS Behavioral Health Clinical Services Department employs over 30 people whose sole function is to support the quality of care provided at UHS facilities. (This is in addition to the clinical and quality personnel at each facility.) This department makes more than 1,000 annual site visits to our behavioral health facilities to ensure their compliance with quality of care standards. Why We’re Successful At UHS, we’re deeply proud to be one of the largest companies of our kind, but we’re more proud of how we’ve grown: by staying committed to our core principles and to continuous improvement. We believe our commitment to providing high quality healthcare in the communities we serve is the key to the success of UHS as an organization. We have grown by identifying communities that lack quality options for care, and by acquiring other providers whose operations we believe can be improved. In fact, every year, UHS invests hundreds of millions of dollars in facility upgrades, safety improvements, maintenance, enhancements and expansions to improve the patient experience, deliver the highest quality of care and increase access to both acute and behavioral healthcare. In addition to strong performance on evidence-based, industry-wide clinical quality metrics, UHS’ Behavioral Health patients consistently report high levels of satisfaction with the care they receive at UHS facilities. Last year, our patient satisfaction grand mean score – on a 1-5 scale – was 4.47. Our patient satisfaction scores have gone up every year over the past five years. We continue to broaden our operational and clinical capabilities to meet the growing demand for our services – in particular in behavioral health. Approximately one in five Americans—our friends, coworkers and loved ones – experience a behavioral health condition like depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress or substance use disorder. But with appropriate care and in the appropriate setting, treatment can be effective and recovery is possible – which is why the UHS Behavioral Health Division is constantly working to expand our ability to help communities in need of our services. Through our ongoing philanthropic partnerships and sustained community outreach efforts, UHS maintains a long track record of working collaboratively with a wide range of respected stakeholders to 2 impact pressing healthcare challenges. UHS remains committed, on both a local and a national level, to raising awareness about mental health and addiction issues and replacing stigma with hope. We are proud of our ongoing work with our non-profit partners in providing resources and expertise to transform healthcare delivery, educate the public and advocate for equal treatment for mental healthcare. Our partners include:  The National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention (Action Alliance) – UHS Behavioral Health is a national partner of the Action Alliance. Presently, 11 UHS BH facilities serve as pilot sites for the Zero Suicide initiative, an evidence-based risk assessment and education model for community based suicide prevention that will be made available to the entire BH Division by the end of 2016. Our local outreach efforts include the development of suicide prevention resources such as presentations geared toward primary care physicians, school personnel and emergency department staff. The UHS behavioral health facilities are using these tools to educate their communities on this critical issue.  National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) – UHS has had a long-standing affiliation with NAMI. Most of our facilities collaborate with NAMI on a local level. On a national level, UHS and NAMI have partnered in the development and implementation of NAMI Homefront, an innovative educational program designed for families, caregivers and friends of military service members and veterans with mental health conditions. There are currently NAMI Homefront chapters in 18 states along with an interactive online platform to expand the program’s reach nationally. UHS’s commitment to the military – including active duty, veterans and their families – extends well beyond our partnership with NAMI. UHS is proud of our Patriot Support Program, a national specialized network of behavioral treatment centers, support staff and medical professionals serving over 160 Military installations and VA hospitals across the United States and overseas. Both on a corporate and local level, employees and facilities regularly contribute to the Wounded Warrior Project® to help provide support and assistance to wounded service members. Through our “Hire a Vet” initiative, UHS demonstrates our commitment to providing employment opportunities to veterans who have recently separated from or who are about to separate from the armed forces. As a result of the dedication and professionalism of the employees, medical professionals and administrators at UHS facilities, we’re proud to have earned numerous accolades and recognitions, including the following:  Over the past 4 years, 83 UHS facilities (both acute care and behavioral health) have been designated Top Performers in Key Quality Measures by The Joint Commission. The Joint Commission performs over 20,000 assessments annually of healthcare facilities on behalf of the federal government and bestows the Top Performer designation only to facilities that attain 95% performance on key evidence-based accountability metrics linked to positive patient outcomes.  In our Behavioral Health Division, over half of our eligible facilities received this distinguished recognition including more than 40 facilities attaining this elite designation in multiple years. 3  The percentage of UHS behavioral health facilities comprising the total Top Performers nationwide over the past 4 years is more than double the percentage of Top Performer facilities of UHS BH competitors.  In 2015, for the 3rd year in a row, UHS was listed among Fortune’s World’s Most Admired Companies – ranking 2nd in the healthcare sector.  PayScale/Business Insider named UHS one of the top 30 Most Meaningful Companies to Work For. ### 4
