ADVERTISING I 21 up in Ten persons were injured this. morning in two automobile colli- sions which were caused as result of the city?s third blackout. One of the victims is in critical condition. Both crashes were in Alaskan Way. One occurred shortly before the blackout went into ef? fect and the other just before daylight. In the first accident, Maxwell Reeves, 20 years old, son of the Everett superintendent of schools, suffered a critical head injury. He is in Harbor-view County Hospital. The automobile in which he was riding was speeding to get off the streets before the blackout and hit a concrete bulkhead at Alaskan Way and Bay Street. Three others. in the car were hurt. Two other cars nearly crashed in - the same spot while the injured were loaded into ambulances ,the darkness. Reckless Driving Charged The driver, Joseph D. Henshaw, 23, of 1319 Ninth Ave., was treated for minor cuts He was charged with reckless driving and having no operator?s license. was driving about 35 or 40 miles an hour tO?get off the city?s streets by bl a 0 time,? Hen~ shaw told Traffic Investigators C. E. Dean, G. N. MacDougal and J. M. Manning. ?The bulkhead suddenly loomed up in front of me. Then we crashed." Others injured were Sigrid Yacgcr, 21, a University of Wash? ington student from Mount Vernon, and Lucille Thomas, 21, a clerk. Both live at 1416 E. 41st St. They were taken to Harborview with cerebral concussions, Miss Yeager in serious condition. While the officers were aiding the injured. an automobile operated by Eugene S. Morgan, 21, an elevator operator, almost hit the wrecked machine and its victims. Morgan Waschargcd with reckless driving. Girl Becomes Unuervcd Audrey Kenyon, 18, of 2121 Queen Anne Ave., riding in Morgan?s car, became unnerved at the accident scene. She was taken. to Police Headquarters, whe?re? she fainted. Police took her home after she was treated in the City Hospital. A third car nearly collided with the first two stopped automobiles before the injured had been re; moved. The driver abandoned his machine and disappeared in the darkness. ?Allithree cars were impounded. Six persons were injured in the second blackout accident. Two au- tomobiles collided head-on in Alas- kan Way South at Holgate Street. Both were driving without lights. Clarence G. Steinhoff, 57, sheet- metal worker, 3610 46th Ave. 5., driving. a? car north 'in Alaskan ~Way south, suffered a 'cut jaw. _He was charged with reckless driv- ing by Traffic Investigators N. Adcock and R. A. Wilson. Al Peterson, 42, electrician, 3034 35th. Ave. S. W., suffered a head injury. William Herring, 33, elec- trician, 4138 49th Ave S. W., suf? fered a fractured left wrist, a cer- ebral concussion and face cuts, and Herman Bauer, 47, gas welder. 3036 46th Ave. S. W., suffered a cerebral concussion. All three were riding with; Wilbur McInnes, 49, restaurant in' with . hit a bulkhead. Joseph D. Henshaw, driver of a car involved in a pro-blackout crash this morning, was treated for minor cuts. Henshaw said he I was speeding down Alaskan ??ay to miss the blackout. Instead he operator, 2806 29th Ave. W., driver of the other machine. suffered fractured ribs. . His wife, Evangeline McInnes, 35, suffered a cerebral concussion and head lacerations. All injured persons were taken to Harborview. In another a?ceident, Ingvold Shil- langer, <13, of the William Tell Hotel, Second Avenue and Wall Street, a pedestrian. suffered a Cerebral con- cussion when he was struck by the automobile of Edwin L. Covey, Jr., 22, a waiter, 815 Pike St., in Fourth Avenue at Pike Street a few min- utes after the City?s lights had been blacked out. Another pedestrian. Clifton Camp- bell, 56, of 110 Cherry St., was in- jured critically when struck by an automobile in Sixth Avenue South at Dearborn Street shortly before the blackout. Warden Clinton Duffy last night asked for 80 experienced inmates to volunteer for the most disliked work in the prison?work in the jute mill. Bitney, 18-year-old air- warden, was ar- rested early today when he became ?excited? during the blackout and tried to shoot out a traffic blinker light that ?had been left burning. Bitney was arrested by J.- R. Olders?haw. an air raid captain, and Patrolman Arthur Swanson. Bit~ ney?s A. R. P. arm band and re~ volver were held as evidence and he was jailed without charge by Police Capt. \Valter Dench. Oldershaw said, the shooting oc? curred at 12th Avenue South and Jackson Street. Bitney, a mechanic, lives at 1815 14th Ave. He told Captain he ?got excited? and?shot at ?all the lights.? Police could find no lights that hadbeen hit. Four empty shells were found in the revolver. It provides fine and,imprison- ment up to $300 and 90 days for failure to extinguish lights that can be seen from outside. The same penalties apply to other pro- visions. The bill gives the police chief power to enforce blackout regula- tions not in the ordinance, and declares the chief?s rules ?shall have the force and effect of law? until repealed by the council. It provides that only emergency vehicles shall operate with lights, that private automobiles drive with- I out lights at 15 miles an hour. Emergency cars are allowed '20 miles an hour. The emergency vehicles must use the type of lights prescribed byiythe ordinance. Their light lenses must be painted overniith an opaque paint, exceptfor a slit three inches long and half an inch wide, extend- ing belo'w the center of the lens.
